Easy. Scale your tractor and trailer. Deduct weight of tractor.
Frank Speak and tscottme Thank this. -
They don't have any scales on the yard and I have a short 75 mile haul with no scales anywhere
-
Call your state police. Ask for someone to show up with portable scales as a training exercise to see what you are empty.
Conversely google public scales near your exact location.
Put everything on the platform it will come up with a number empty tractor and trailer. Pay the man his 10 dollars or whatever.
Also...
Your vehicle's data stamp on the inside of your tractor should have a tare and gross vehicle weight. Same thing with your trailer, whatever it is near the glad hands. Add em up.
Somewhere on that Heil trailer should state capacity in either liters, pounds or US or imperial gallon. Find out the intended cargo, get a calculator out and start figuring what it will take to get you to 80000 pounds with such a payload capacity. Subtract and the result should roughly be your tare weight.
Or call the trailer factory direct and ask very specifically about your specific trailer, HOW MUCH EMPTY IS IT as BUILT?"
Add the weight of your tractor to it with fuel (And you) in it. You should get pretty close to a tare.JReding Thanks this. -
Read the registration paper for the trailer, my 1000cubicfoot stephens showes 9300 on the paper but i think its closter to 11,000 because i know how much my truck weighs with fuel and when i get on the scales to get my light weight with 256gallons of fuel im at 29,860.
Id guess your hiel is the same or a tad heavier because they use a heavier gauge aluminium for the tank then the stephens.
When you get loaded you dont load ontop of a scale??Frank Speak Thanks this. -
i would guestimate around 14k empty, since its 3 compartment and only tandem axle. Your BOL should have weights on it, just look for "tare" and that should be your total empty weight (truck + trailer). Depending on your truck, there should be a sticker from the manufacturer with the empty weight of the truck.

Single compartments are in the low 13s I think

When i get back to my yard ill check what the “stamped” dry weight of one of my hiels says. Also its gona depend if your running 22.5s or 24.5s steel vs aluminum wheels.
