When C Brakes first came out springs were breaking and plungers sticking in them every week. The Cummins service manager even asked us how we were fixing them.
We had no instructions but adjusted them this way. Install the proper feeler gauge under the bottom of the adjuster. Snug the adjuster down and back it off. Tighten it thumb and finger tight. Then lock the jam nut. Feeler gauge should slide back and forth with some resistance. If not reset it. Do not expect to get that 45 degree angle gauge pushed back in there. Do it right the first time.
The socket for the accessory drive is 1 & 5/16. May have to grind the outside down a bit.
You mention C brakes but look like Jakes? I thank the clearance and gaskets are different.ShooterK2 Thanks this. -
I think they’re C brakes. But They do have jake brakes & Jacobs casted into them. The gaskets look the same but upon further look at the numbers now that I have them down, the part numbers are off at the end...?
I bought a dial gauge and a magnetic holder to back the jakes off .23 / that is, the info from quickserve. Would you recommend against this?Last edited: May 7, 2018

I thank you have the wrong gaskets. Get the gaskets for your Jake Brake housing number. May also need three o rings. Adjust them to the Jake spec. I cannot recommend against quickserve just be sure you are on the correct application. Does quickserve have specs on Jacobs Brakes? I doubt it.
On old here say Cummings Engine Co. thought the engine brake was not very sellable. Sold the rights off to Chelsea and he started his own company. When the pattends ran out they came out with the C brake. The early ones 1987 and 88 had frequent problems.HopeOverMope Thanks this. -
I thought C brake & Jacobs bits were interchangable ??
But happy to be corrected. -
What to do if I bar the motor over to A, but neither cylinder 1 or 6 are both loose? I’ve barred the motor over about 5 times, but I can’t seem to get intake and exhaust loose at the same time... for any of the letters... except notch C made both on 6 loose...
I can see clearly where the accessory drive is marked a, b, and c...
Do I loosen the adjusting nut and watch to see if they close? -

I know a guy that used to clean parts in his bathtub, boy his wife hated that. Pretty bad when you want to take a shower, but have to take parts outta the tub to do so LMFAO. True story

Yeah, I guess that’s the difference for me. My wife has been with me since before the trucking business and grew into it with me. This is nothing lol
