Oxbow,as far as i know nobody uses those anymore.
As to this specific truck,if you look at the back, you will see he has "french doors".
2 half doors that open to the side.

For spreading material, they rely on the knowledge off the driver.

    Oxbow Thanks this.

Ah, I see the hinges now.
With spreader chains and a good operator a person can lay out a perfect lift of crushed aggregate. Can't be done without some sort of control of the gate opening as the material will not fall out evenly.

Yup but the chains have gone here.
Apperently still in use in 98989's area.
Why they stopped using chains,i do not know.
I will ask a friend off mine next week,he should know as he has 20y with end dumps.

    @Oxbow
Take a good look at both pictures 98989 posted.
Those are end AND side dumps.

Are the wholes on the tailgate of the truck in the last picture used for that purpose, or what are they for?

    SAR Thanks this.

Yes, I was noticing the hinges. Does the bed actually have the ability to dump sideways, or just open the side?

    SAR Thanks this.

You can choose to where it dumps.
    Left
    Right
    Back.
The bed is on 4 ball joints.
You have 2 pins to block 2 joints.
Which ever side you put the pins.,that side cannot raise.
So it dumps to that side.
Hydraulic ram is centered in the middle off the bed.

    Oxbow and 98989 Thank this.
