Hi guys. I am writing to find out if anyone has info on a way to get around North Carolina's high worker's compensation requirements for owner operators?
I am an owner/driver for Fedex Custom Critical and I want to move to North Carolina, but the worker's comp here is insanely high. They would require that I give up 5.2%? of my gross pay per driver for worker's comp. Say I did $1,000 load and the truck has two drivers, me and my wife, that means $104 would go for worker's comp on that one load. That's a huge difference compared to what I currently am paying, which is $25.25 per driver per week.

I am wondering if there are some kind of special rules that apply for self-employed owner/operators that do not have any employees and operates interstate.

So, just that we are clear, you are asking for info on tax evasion.

So don't move to North Carolina, and then thank the founding fathers for building the republic the way they did and enjoy it while it lasts.

Or are you moving there to be closer to higher paying freight lanes but still want the cheap operation costs you had where freight was cheap? Life's always a series of compromises.

Man I'm trying not to make this one political....
There is reasons why our taxes are so high. It's got really bad....for example let's say you make 20 bucks an hour and get laid off.....file for unemployment....the unemployment office will require you to go to a job fair....alot of these companies like burger king.... McDonald's love those places.....and they offer you a job for minimum wage and you refuse it then you lose your unemployment benefits that you pay into.
I know its kinda off topic but that's how bad it's getting here

Wrong, I'm asking if there are exceptions for self-employed owner/operators that run interstate but have residency in NC. The NC worker's comp requirements that Fedex told me seem unfair and I am just checking if there are some kind of exceptions to this requirement for O/P truckers.

You can move to NC, your business can stay where it's at.

I want to move there because of friends and relatives, not because of better freight lines. Actually, freight lines are better for me the more north I am.

If they are close to Tennessee, there is no income tax. Should look into it.
