As the sides are hinged at the bottom, the material falls clear off the truck.
Those sides are raised and lowered by hydraulic rams.
Think 98989 has pictures off those.
    Nice versatile system.
Proven technology as the Germans have been using that for donkey years.

    Oxbow and 98989 Thank this.

    What does mean wholes?

Do you mean of vertical part placed behind tailgate?
If yes they make it to prevent material to go sideways. It is not really needed on 3axles because body has longer overhang from tipping arm and thereby it sits lower to ground

In this case both red trucks got sideboards hinged only up, orange truck in back have both up and down.
None od them is fitted with hydraulics.
We can get from factory only hydraulics on left, and it is hinged only on bottom.
We had a truck fitted with austrian body that could open sideboards from below and from upper side fitted with hydraulics so you never had to get out of truck. Also one with pneumatic hinges down, it was fitted with springs

After looking at this more closely, it appears that the tailgate opens inside these holes, and that must be what you meant by pinning the tailgate.
