No, of course not. They will be recycled. Almost all materials in these batteries will be used again in new batteries, just as with conventional lead batteries.
At the moment about 98.7% of the weight of a car is recycled over here, 88.9% is re-used, 9.8% is burned in special power plants.

This was the Great London Smog of 1952. Approximately 12,000 people died in the worst case of air pollution ever recorded in London. The smog was the result of fog combined with smoke from the coal fired open fires that the British used in their houses,. Those fires are very inefficient, so they used a lot of coal, resulting in a lot of smoke and SO2. It resulted in the Clean Air Act of 1956, and that was not the first act for London on this subject. In fact there had been several acts in the centuries before. London was notorious for this kind of smog in the 19th and early 20th century. -

The smoke is dispersed high up in the air, and doesn't reach the ground immidiately. Only when it has been very much diluted will it eventually reach the ground miles away from where it originated. -
I always like watching the coal dump trucks, with their big oversized specd trucks and bodies..........
