The vehicle technology is relatively easy. It's the other troublesome realities that will keep this [ground based on current roads] autonomous idea from happening anytime soon.

Best we can expect to see is "auto pilot mode" in select interstate sections during ideal weather.

I'm in dispatch now, thinking of retiring early, so this won't effect me. For the sake of younger drivers, I hope I'm wrong, but robotization is gonna happen sooner rather then later...Scary times....

We all know what our windshields look like after an evening drive across the desert or just about anywhere in the US. Bugs so thick you need a scraper to get them off. I've always said, what would happen if a big bug smashes into a sensor on a self driving car or truck? Well, I just found my answer, and this explains why completely autonomous trucks will never take our jobs. A Tesla auto driving system was completely disabled by a moth.

Robotics and the logistics of moving loads across thousands of miles of snow covered roads, endless construction, power outages, fueling concerns, etc are two different animals. No doubt robotics per se isn't already becoming commonplace, but OTR and final mile trucking jobs will be the LAST thing where a human is removed completely from the picture.

I think it's coming eventually but I think lot of people are vastly underestimating the hurdles autonomous vehicles face.
We were promised flying cars 40 years ago. I'm still waiting.
The good thing about computers is they will have no trouble passing a hair test ;)

OK, like I said, I hope I'm wrong. It's best too have a positive attitude in the face of the inevitable....

Self-driving trucks are going to be a long ways off.

Those little tiny cars that you could just about lift up with one hand are already killing people.

If they try that with an 80000 pound vehicle the Carnage will be like a terrorist attack.

In the meantime wrongful death lawsuits rightly should bankrupt these people trying to do this, and deter others from doing the same.

It may not exactly work that way but it should.

But at any rate it's a long time off.

I’ve asked this question and I’ve seen tons of others ask this question and every time it comes up it seems the majority of people say it’ll never happen and if it does it’ll be 50-100 years at the earliest that it actually happens. I’m wanting to get my cdl and get into trucking so it’s a scary thought to see this push to make it happen and one of my biggest worries is it happening before I can actually get my cdl or it happening a year into me having the cdl. I see tons of good reasoning why it’s not a realistic idea anytime soon and for the most part I believe the people, but a part of me still worried about it happening. I’m hoping that when and if it happens, it happens a long time after my lifetime.

I doubt they will ever come into being because by the time they perfect the technology other robotic technology will have caught up and humanoid robots (crude Terminator type stuff at first) will be real. No need to make the car or truck self driving when your robot can drive it.
