I'm posting this here because I definitely do recognize that having only been driving CMV's since last August, I am a New Driver, and will be for quite a while yet.
We read a lot here about mega carrier driver mills churning out Steering Wheel Holders by the bajillions, Yada, Yada, Yada.
So, what's your planned improvement to the system?
I studied my tail off to get my CDL-LP. I did the same at the CDL school to pass with flying colors.
I put up with a cynical, angry, burnt-out "mentor" for 5 weeks to qualify for an "upgrade"and a truck to drive solo.
All of this was at considerable personal expense, and now I'm just a steering wheel holder. (Although, even with only 7/8 months experience, it took me less than 2 days to find a mostly local, at home with my wife and dogs every night, Class A driving job. )
How would you improve the system?
I have a few suggestions of my own, which I will not yet publish.

OK, so what's your solution, then?

Not sure what are you asking
aussiejosh and Odin's Rabid Dog Thank this. -
How would you improve the driver training system? -
If you are asking how to not be a steering wheel holder, talk to the
DINO SOARS and the old timers and learn from them, Master the operation of using a clutch and shifting without it, and spend some time in a truck that doesn't hold your hand and do everything for you.
That's a good start.DSK333 Thanks this. -
"How many commercial drivers are in the US?
There are approximately 3.5 million professional truck drivers in the United States, according to estimates by the American Trucking Association."
Now, considering there are approx. 3.45 million professional truck drivers in the USA; the record is pretty good, in my opinion. With that many drivers, there's just no way to weed out a few nut cases.RedRover, Lepton1, Dumdriver and 1 other person Thank this. -
Get rid of government subsidies for CDL training. Too much profit from just minimal "training".
O.Henry, QuietStorm, TripleSix and 1 other person Thank this. -
Ideally, the old timers would train the apprentices. This would prevent 6 month wonders from training. But why should the real professionals take the pay cut to train some of the losers the megas dredge up?
driverdriver and tscottme Thank this. -
You not a steering wheel holder your a truck driver ! Just not a lot of experience. I went the mega carrier and got my CDL from their school. You could give them and crazy question about driving and they had the answer. They could not teach someone how to drive if they can't drive a car. They can teach you how to handle a truck and drive around corners or in the snow.
