I drive a brand new car (well, 2017) with a manual transmission and roll down windows. You should’ve seen the salesman’s face when I told him those were deal breakers. lol. He thought/ thinks I was nuts. Hey, I wanna shift my car because it’s more fun, and I don’t want power windows because it’s one more thing to break. What can I say? I’m a minimalist.
As far as my truck? I drive in center city Philadelphia all day, every day. Shifting has never been much of an issue. The only time it is is when I get stuck in the hoopty that the fleet department put the wrong transmission in. It “works”, but the shifter is back about 18 inches and tilted to the side. Can’t tell which gear you’re in, you literally have to sit sideways and reach back to shift it. That ones a pain- other than that, nah, no issues in MAJOR traffic

I don't have a lot of experience with autos but the auto I'm in today will allow the driver to easily move up or down a gear without moving to manual mode.
I put off getting moved to an auto as long as I could but having driven the '18 DT12 the last 9 months mostly western US, I will say it's not a problem. I won't mind staying in it but would gladly move back to a 13 or 18 stick, but I do prefer the auto to the lame 10 speed and don't care if I never have to drive one of those again.rank and Odin's Rabid Dog Thank this. -
When I got in this 10 speed I am in now, it had 380k on it. I don’t know what kind of abuse it had been put through, but I can shift that transmission so fast floating if I am trying to get up to speed. Bobtailing I leave traffic in the dust sometimes just to mess with them.

That's a problem with the carrier not the transmission though.skellr Thanks this. -
The 16 FL Cascadia Evo I drove for 7 months stayed where I put it, when in manual mode.

I have never driven a truck with an automatic transmission, but I know they are worthless. I know how to shift gears, so I know more than all of you put together. I have read countless articles and the opinions of "experts" but I know more than any expert and all the articles are wrong. After all, I have 9 years of schooling; I dropped out in the 6th grade, but had to repeat 3 grades, everyone knows that 6+3=11.
All technology is worthless, I prefer a truck with roll down windows, no power steering, no power brakes, no ABS, no air conditioner, no heater, and instead of a sleeper, I'd rather put a board across the two front seats. Microwave, fridge, CB, radio, cell phone, oh please !!! The less technology, the less things to break. Let's ignore that most technological developments last and work just as long as old schools technology.
New developments and technology are worthless! I bought one of those fancy- pants GPS things, the box said it contained all maps for the US & Canada. I could not figure out how to make it work, so I broke it open. Guess what, there were no maps in it at all, just some plastic parts !!! You see, technology is worthless! I prefer old school paper maps anyway. Progress who needs it !?
And, I am really good at shifting gears, so I am better than all of you! If I make disparaging comments about others, that makes me feel better about myself.
I asked my boss why the industry is transitioning to automatic transmissions, and he said "the unit can real-time synch via a satt link a with a topography data stream which gives the unit an a priori view over the horizon, and that reduces wear, and is optimal for fuel economy." I don't know what any of that means, but I know it won't work, because it is technology. My boss says he is an MBA, but I doubt that because he is too short to have played professional basketball in the MBA.
Also, I don't need no ELD, I am just as good of a driver as Kevin Roper was.
I can shift gears just as well as Kevin Roper, if not better, so that makes me better you! I am old school, I prefer paper logs, not some technological advancement that prevents me from driving past a legal, safe, and sane time limit. So I CAN drive 28 hours straight, and not get tired or distracted, because I shift gears.
I fear technology because I do not understand it, so I resent and demean other drivers. I have convinced myself that I am better than anyone because I shift gears. Admittedly, I do not understand and fear technological developments, but if I keep repeating that I know how to shift gears, that makes me right! There, that settles the discussion!Trucking in Tennessee and Odin's Rabid Dog Thank this. -
Possibly the stupidest post in history of this website. Would you wear a scuba tank on your back if you breathe just fine? That’s how some of us feel about manuals. They are a waste of my money
