So, I've again decided to allow others to use my Sprint connection while at the truck stop and I always monitor bandwidth usage and hosts connected to my wireless access point. I came across something I found quite odd. I looked up the hostnames for two clients connected to my AP and found that it's actually the TruckPC the companies are putting in to replace the Qualcomm.

My question is, what does the TruckPC use the WiFi for? And who on earth would set these up to automatically connect to any unsecured network? Anyone who reads tech news sites knows that people have been arrested for connecting to and using unsecured AP's, and it makes me wonder how long it will be until we see a truck company getting sued for "stealing" peoples' Internet access.

The good news is that if the messages will come across the WiFi instead of satellite/cellular, there's a few trucks here that will have their messages in under 150ms.

This might explain your answer on truckpc>> http://www.windowsfordevices.com/articles/AT9949831807.html

I have never heard of someone being arrested for using a unsecured AP.(I'm not saying it doesn't happen) I don't see how that is stealing when the owner of the AP left the network unsecured. Personally, I would never leave AP unsecured, you as the owner of the AP is responsible for any information that comes across that AP. For instances, if someone was looking at child porn across your AP. Who are the police going to come after? YOU, the IP address will lead them back to you as the owner of the AP. Someone with the correct knowledge and ability has access to your network/computers.

Its like hacking. Hacking is not illegal, hacking unauthorized areas is illegal. I'm sure many people on here will disagree with me on this one. I would comment more but I have to get to class..........

Whether the connection is secure or not, it's still a crime and considered a felony offense. Unauthorized access of computers and networks is covered under US Code Title 18.

My question is, is why would you do that? First off, Sprint has a bandwidth limit of 5 gigs a month, you keep it going over that substancially , they are going to terminate you. I have enough problems keeping my numbers down by myself, I'm certainly not going to let others run it up for me. Another thing, one of the reasons I got the Sprint card in the first place is because the wi-fi slows to a crawl during the busiest hours at a truckstop, when everyone is parked for the night. There are a hell of a lot fewer people connected to the Sprint tower, thus I get a faster connection. You are defeating this by opening the Sprint tower up for all the wi-fi users. If I'm sitting in the same truckstop, you are slowing me down when you do this and affecting my service that I paid good money for.

What I saw in your link was illegal activity using others networks. Not the access of the networks themselves. If the owner of the network allows it, it's not illegal to access it.

The one who allows access could get into trouble with their carrier if their contract states it is not to be used as a public access point.

What the actual law is about this issue is the use of the wifi without the approval of the person involved.

Just because you might be parked close enough to the local super 8 and it is free to the room renters does not mean that it is free to you to get on. After all, the wifi is considered part of the room rental.

I will NOT connect to a computer to computer connection!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Like was mentioned its not wise to allow unlocked access. Down loading kiddie porn is only one of the reasons.

I think you need to read that US Code again. No where in that Title 18, did it say anything about networks. I will give you a instances. Last year in the news, there was a few stores that left there AP unsecured. They caught up with the hackers and prosecuted them. Not for accessing a unsecured network but for the unauthorized activity they did on the network. We could go around on this subject all night. The bottom line is, secure your AP.

In todays times, I don't leave my keys in anymore, even at a gas station for a quick minute. :biggrin_25512:

    Ditto !!!!!!!

Something else I would like to elaborate on that most people don't realize. When your using a messenger service like Yahoo and your in a chat room. A pop up chat screen appears from someone you don't know and wants to chat with you. They want to share a photo/file of themselves and you accept it. That is a peer-to-peer connection. Someone with the correct knowledge and tools can access your computer thru that connection.
