He should make enough to replace his driving self and his book keeping self and dispatching self and mechanic self + ROI.
Driving 1500 miles/wk x $.50 after employer's portion of Comp, EI, Pension, benefits etc = $750
Disptaching 3 hrs/wk x $15/hr = $45/wk
Book keeping 3 hrs/wk x $15/hr = $45/wk
PM's 3 hrs/wk x $20/hr = $60/wk
Truck $60,000/250 weeks = $240/wk
Fuel and IFTA 1500 miles/ 5 mpg = 300 gal x $3.50 = $1050/wk
$750 + $45 + $45 + $60 + $240 + $1050 = $2190/1500 miles =
=$1.46/mile + all other expenses (cell phone, food, repairs, maint, interest, ROI, plates, insurance.......)Last edited: May 29, 2018

Yea no set # will work for everyone. Say your truck is paid off and doesn't give you much trouble mechanical wise. Say after fuel you do 3500 a week and are home everyday weekends off. Now another guy working there does the same as you except he has a 3500 month truck payment. He's not making out near as good with the guy who's truck is paid for and doesn't give him headaches every week

Okay, so the guy said his operating costs were $1.30 per mile BEFORE driver wages. Let's assume driver wages plus overhead & benefits are $0.70 a mile. That's $2.00 a mile cost to run the truck.
Determine what a decent rate of return is on that $2.00 a mile and there you go.
It's not rocket scienceLast edited: Jun 1, 2018

Here's my month of May snapshot running a dry van in the PNW:
$17,560 revenue.
6,500 miles run.
10 Full days off at home.
14 additional nights at home in my own bed.
5 stops at home in route to shower, visit with wife, etc.
My operating expenses BEFORE my salary & benefits were right at $1.20 a mile.
You do the math...
Bottom line, I made some really good coin and hardly workedbewhite90, TallJoe and SteveScott Thank this.
