ISX CM870 randomly shuts down

Well here's an update on everything. It finally went to Cummins for a check up. After many hours of checking everything over, they determined that all electrical was good. They ran a new ECM power wire from the battery box but it kept losing power. So a test dummy ECM has been put in by them. I was told to run it for 2 weeks. If no hiccups occur, A new ECM will be installed. I'm glad Ryder is stepping up to the plate on this one. They acknowledged the problem was there before I purchased the truck and will pay the repairs. I did my run today with no problems at all today. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it is the ECM and that this matter will be closed once and for all.

I'm on day 2 of a "rental" ECM and no issues so far. We'll see as the days go on. I added up all the days paper work when it was acting up and I lost a ton of paid mileage. I caught on a little too late, but at least it didn't go on for many days on end.

 

Update!

The test period with the test dummy ECM is over. Not a single glitch with the tester. Without a doubt, the ECM that was in the truck before I purchased it was at fault. What a headache for everybody involved, myself included. A big thanks to Ryder trucks sales for stepping up to the plate and acknowledging the problem was pre existing and for covering the entire cost even though ECM's are not covered in the 30 day warranty.

The real silver lining out of all this is the work was performed by a Cummins shop. I added all the mileage up on the tester and ended with a total to be programmed into the new ECM. I gave the total to the tech at Cummins. They did the installation but were unable to program the mileage in. He stated that the mileage in the CM870 engine ECM could not be registered for that model because of its age(LOL) and that I would have to start from 0.

I went along with it for a day. After endless calculations between stops, talking with management about the whole (odometer) issue it became a virtual migraine keeping track of it all. I contacted the service Mgr at Cummins and said something must be done, I'll get back to you…is what I got. Yesterday evening, my truck was brought in at a Kenworth dealer for a grease and lube. They asked the mileage and I explained everything. The (apprentice) tech said he could work the mileage in the ECM. I said good luck, Cummins up the road couldn't do it.

To my surprise, it was done along with the grease this morning. Odometer was up to par with the numbers given. Took him 5 minutes apparently. I got a call this Afternoon from the Cummins service Mgr. He asked that I drop the truck off to figure out how to input mileage. I said don't bother, the shop down the road did it in 5 min. The silence that followed for a few seconds from him was that of being owned and totally schooled by a non cummins shop.

Moral of the story is, it cost me $60 in change to learn that the very people trained by the manufacturer to service and repair their own products, are not always the most competent ones to perform a very simple task. And it changed my outlook on apprentices from thinking that they wreck stuff at others expense to actually taking pride in doing a good job.
