Why do you say that? Because of how over-regulated things have become? I still look at OTR as freedom, although thats probably just a mirage compared to the wild west days.

I’ve talked with some that say 5 state minimum before they consider it OTR!

It is hard, but not impossible to beat the pay of an LTL driver while working OTR. Flatbed and car haul are some of the better paying positions although heavy haul and specialized are the best paying. And yes, expect to be treated as a newbie which is ridiculous.
I was backwards myself, had plenty of local and specialized experience before ever trying a big OTR fleet and they didn't want to accept any of it. Learned to drive tractor trailer hauling cars in and out of NY City daily and was a heavy wrecker operator, you know the guy they called when one of their drivers screwed up, could tow their entire truck and trailer anywhere but wasn't qualified to drive it for them.
OTR is not all it is cracked up to be, unpredictable schedule, hard to deal with shippers and receivers and although you travel after a while all the highways look the same. With ELDs and satellite communications, in-cab cameras and nit picky driver managers there really isn't much freedom on the road anymore.DrDieselUSA, Texas_hwy_287, Gearjammin' Penguin and 1 other person Thank this. -
