I'm typically an optimist, but I can't disagree with you here. It will be a very tough year.
If I may, I'll attempt to brighten the picture just a little. I'm currently in commercial lending, and my bank recently approved a large equipment revolving line of credit for a fairly large carrier. Why? They are well capitalized, they had very little other debt, and they have an excellent reputation in the industry after decades in the business. They've proven they are capable of managing in the down times. There are lots of carriers out there that are in a good position to whether the downturn. And that's what 2009 will be.
Most are expecting to see a recovery by the end of the year, with the cumulative effect on GDP in 2009 resulting in a 2.9% retraction. Then we will see growth in 2010 and 11. And in all likely hood, if this scenario plays out, you'll begin to see freight pick up a few months before the growth starts. I'd still be wise, and try to plan for rough times, but I have a lot of faith that we'll come through this.
I might take a look at some of the publicly held carriers and see what there financials look like. The only ones I'd be worried about going under are the ones that are highly leveraged and will be under pressure from there financial institutions and may be at risk of losing their credit facilities. If you work for a company that claims to have no debt or very little, your in a much better position.

Good post Andrew and an excellent point. All the miles in the world do not help if they are one day out of business. There are more than several well capitalized companies out there and they will "jump all over" a chance to [ick up a deal on a weak carrier and/or new business. Thanks for your post
