THAT'S it. Now, I'm getting this. The companies have TOO MANY trucks and want to fill them with 'DRIVERS' so they can try to expand their foot-print and capture more accounts (that's the growth model of trucking). THAT'S why they pay drivers by-the-mile. They can afford to pay them peanuts ('Sorry Joe, No more runs today, nothin lined up until 2 days, SIT WHERE YOU ARE). We'll call you when we need you.

He's salaried with expected avg. of 3000 miles. That means, if the company has a RUN that needs to go from A-to-B, he does it. Most of the time, they have 3000 miles for him to run every-week, but if not, then he usually runs 2400 a week. No matter,...he gets his check every - week (with a mileage bonus). If he's meeting the 3k per week mark, he gets a few hundred dollars extra. FOR OTR driving, i understand that Salaried or Hourly, or percentage of load is the best way.

AGAIN, he works for a Large Medical Transporter. His job is 'coveted' by Drivers who run long and hard hours (he's a worker). He makes above avg. income in comparison to most OTR truckers.

i have all weekends off for my 34 reset, as well as i am home daily, so i do all the usual things during the week, and on weekends, when i have my helper, i get more done.

I'm at home, leaving out tomorrow. I don't go home often. I will start with a fresh 70. For us, I expect to start getting close to my 70 limit at about day 7, if not, then things are slower than I care for. Once I bump up against my 70, I don't mind bumping it every day for weeks on end. That way, I know I'm making as much money as I can possibly make. When I start accumulating larger "70 hours" due to weekend timing or other issue out of my control, then I know I'm not running optimally and to the max.

Lots of drivers think I'm an idiot for wanting to run those kinds of hours and use that (running up to recap hours daily, for weeks on end) as a target, but they can take their opinions and shove them. I have no family or other such ties. Different strokes for different folks.

But you're not considered OTR (doesn't sound like)?

    What are you...Regional?

I usually spend them at home with the family and out on the water fishing.

Every once I a while I'm forced to take one out one the road. Ill just plan a place along my route close to the destination to shut down. 34 hours goes fairly fast.
First night i catch up on rest so it's really only killing a single day. Laundry can kill 2 hours. Another hour getting under the truck greasing it and going over it looking for problems and fixing what i find. Breaking out the polish is good for 2 hours. Barely leaves time for a trip to the grocery store to restock the pantry before its time to settle in for the night and btw ready to get back at it early am.

Go home like sane people do. Only the mobile homeless allow themselves to do 34 on the road.

Coover, tscottme, DTP and 2 others Thank this.
