The shortage is big fleets inability to retain drivers.
The answer should be apprenticeships only, no schools, and negotiate your wage starting at 1.20 per mile + bennies or go straight to O/O and share in the successes and failures of your own company.

Supply and demand is the general principle that applies to every aspect of a capitalistic society. In order to make a profit, demand MUST be higher than supply. If there was an available truck for every available load, you would see O/O's going bankrupt overnight and salaries for company drivers decrease even more than their already ridiculously low levels. Shippers and big box retailers created the myth of a severe driver shortages to cover their own butts in the eyes of the consumer because they want to use trucking companies as part of the excuse for higher prices.
As long as drivers continue leaving the business at a much faster rate than new drivers coming in, eventually there really will be a driver shortage and that will cause a shipping crisis. If that happens, O/O's and trucking companies will be on top of the world.Gearjammin' Penguin Thanks this. -
