I suspect the reason many people think retreads are a significant problem is because when they fail the tread often separates en masse from the casing. The resulting large debris is more visually compelling.

I have had more retreads blow and plain fall apart than any new tire unless it had to many miles and needed replaced to begin with.

I pull trailers that have a size that is usually purchased new, and they sometimes hatch a gator just like a cap can. I run after several other drivers picking up loads and returning after they do following mostly the same routes.

Most of my tire failures have been ruptured casings and a catastrophic blow out. Tire goes boom, and it can happen to a properly inflated tire just as well as one that is running too soft.

Back 5-10 years ago I would have to say that many of the gators would of been caps, but the technology and quality control has improved vastly. Schneider runs caps on almost every trailer and I have not had one blow out yet. Personally I would not run them on my tractor...just my own opinion, but on a trailer that get dropped and abused at shippers and recievers its a wise decision. Tire maintenance has become a think of the past for most drivers latlely. I see to many just taking off with out doing a pre trip. This is what causes tire failures...just plain and simple lack of inspection. Take a tire that is low and drive like most people do anymore (65mph or more) and the casing is gonna blow sooner or later. It doesn't matter if its a virgin or cap the tire is pretty much ruined.

If re-caps are so safe , then why don't the people doing the study change the laws to let you run them on the steers

but from their study they fail no more often than a virgin. I am glad people I used to drive for ran them though, because now it takes me almost no effort to change tires from all the practice I have gotten
