Not sure where the info on the hiring freeze came from; but I report to Dallas on Sunday to start my training.

Sounds like their recruiters are just weeding out the ones they dont really want. Companies can be rather selective nowadays.

So I'm running avrg 500 miles a day with approx. 2days a week as wait for more hours or at meatpatch. So in my case, since 1.9.09 'till today (1.30.09) I ran exactly 6998 miles which equals 2332 miles/wk. While it's not exactly anything I'd like to write home about, I can't blame Stevens for it.
Doesn't it suck if you're out of hours and 0 is falling off next day? -
It's only a hiring freeze on experienced drivers not needing training until 4/09 . -
ROFL-but keep on believing that Stevens isn't a scam, and doesn't make a ton of $$$ off of the trainees. I guess they need those trainee log books to keep the wheels moving on those trainers' trucks.
What a bunch of theives. -
I'm pretty sure they keep those with lowest cpm running pretty hard. But as the cpm's get higher, people gets less miles.
I cannot really blame them for that. That's business. They exist to make profit. I wouln't be different.
But what are the rules of engagement here I don't have a clue. There are drivers with high cpm and high mileage and there are also mediocre cpm's running abysmal mileage. I'm guessing it's upto your particular DM.
Just yesterday I spoke with an Alliance driver who was ######## about miles. This week 1400, last week 1700. If you consider that he needs almost 2000 miles/wk just to pay the lease, he's going in a hole.
Then I was talking with another Alliance driver some time ago and he was more than satisfied. He is with Alliance for 4 years. He said he don't know why it is how it is but he will take any load anywhere anytime. And there are drivers who won't. Some don't want to go to NY, some don't want to go up north... maybe that's one part of the difference. Who knows? -

The trainers using trianee log books are usually part of the Lease division. If there are hours left to run they will run them. Illegal yes, but it was common when I was there. I would hide my log when I was sleeping or something so this didn't happen to me.
I drove more than my trainer during that period. He was a company driver so it really wasn't an issue. And at the end of the "tour" he gave me a nice gift to thank me for putting in all the miles, yes they get paid for your miles.
The biggest thing is to remember that as a trainee you are at the absolute bottom of the barrel, no big bucks, no "pull".
Just do as your told and get reconized for a job well done and the rewards will follow. -
Usually, good advice-but I wonder if new drivers fully understand the TREMENDOUS civil and criminal liability involved with hours of service violations? Just doing as you're told is good advice so long as what you're told to do is lawful and ethical. If it's not, then you have to decide if $350 a week is enough to sell your integrity, future, and freedom for.
For me, it's not. YMMV. -
Your the same dude from the other Thread, I will say it again I NEVER ran over - hours and was never asked to.
I was never asked to do anything illegal while at Stevens.
