    If you just flat out quit because one guy told you you're going to fail that's probably a red flag to them that you'll just abandon the truck somewhere on the road if you run into a little adversity.

    If you read my post (admittedly it’s long winded, my apologies but I wanted to be 100% accurate); my gripe isn’t that I paid my own way home. I suspected I would and state as much in my post. It’s that they told me at noon they would “try to find me a way home”, but by 4:30 it became obvious they had no intention of such. By the time I got in the Uber, and was able to recharge my phone, there were 4 calls from the hotel telling me to get my stuff or they were tossing it. So they knew I was on my own. Just tell me that at noon, and I’d have no problem, just don’t lie and try to jerk me around. By the time I got to hotel, last greyhound to Chicago was already gone. And I only had about an 1/2 hr to catch last flight of day to Chicago. I suspect they were trying to strand me in DesMoines for the night. (* just my two cents I can’t say definitively that was their intention) that’s pretty low.

    What I've learned...is i don't care what a co says in that regard...words mean nothing..action speak..I would've given them 2 maybe 3hrs to figure it out or i would've left...never trust a co's word..

    @Aomalley27

    I am an experienced steel hauler, so please understand that I ask this out of pure curiosity and a bit of bewilderment:

    What 40k coil requires *19 separate steps* to secure?!?

    5 chain, 5 binders, edge protectors, strap over top (if you're hyperanal like me), tarp and GO!

    Good God, no wonder TMC drivers take so blasted long at the steel mills!

    OP, I know the situation sucked for you and you feel that they dicked you around, but why in the world did you sit for 4 1/2 hours waiting for word on a ride? Those folks couldn't care less about you once you say you're done. The second they said "we'll TRY to find you a ride home" I'd give em 30 minutes. If I've heard nothing, I'd ask "what's the REALISTIC possibility of getting me a ride?" If the answer was not to my liking, I'd just plan on taking the bus back at 4:00, or got my ### a taxi right at that moment and been done with it, problem solved.

    Lastly, why did you let a old fart basically tell you that you can't do this? No one is perfect when they start, and some just "get it" slower than others, but I feel if you would have stayed with it, you could of done a good amount of damage control in those 3 days, then really started to hone your skills once you were on the road with your trainer. Live and learn as they say. I have to ask, were you just so bummed after hearing his critiques that you figured it was a lost cause, or are you actually that fearful of the job itself? If you're either of those, you'll have a hard time in this industry. Thick skin, well, that's something you either have or you don't, and strong nerves come with time. You will get nervous from time to time when starting out, but over time you will gain confidence.

    I wouldn't throw in the towel, but know this, it's not going to be any different with any other company. If you're going to drive a truck, you're going to have to get over your apprehension with the way you drive and the job itself. Sign on with someone, go through orientation, do your best during your driving tests, take constructive criticism and don't let it bum you out, apply said criticism and then get out there with a trainer and get a feel for it. It'll come to you.

    They would have strung him out one more day with the driving then cut him loose. Saw it done with drivers in the exact same scenario. If your doing that bad the first day, 30 mins of road driving in 2 more days aint gonna fix a whole lot. You either got it, or you dont. With everything aomaly27 has said, i give him props for being realistic. Doesnt sound like tmc has changed one bit in the last 10 years.

    You spent $5k on a school, and quit so quickly?

    Why???

    I understand your concern of being a hazard to society with a lack of experience, but ya gotta start somewhere! Yes, you may be a bit of a menace at first, but judging by your post and ability to question the TMC way, you would have been far ahead of your fellow rookies in no time. But you gave up.

    Just because you paid for school, got a shiny CDL in hand and maybe a certificate, does not make you a driver. That comes with experience.

    We were all rookies at one time. And all have made mistakes along the way. Hell, after 17 years I still screw up from time to time. But I never gave up.

    Find a different company, and try again. But don't give up.

    Best of luck
