Ok so I know Taking off in 1st instead of low is ok when you are empty but what about loaded low gear in my truck is really funny it doesn't like to come out which really messes me up and after having to stop in the intersection a few times I started taking off in first my truck and trailer max out at 72500 it doesn't sound like it dogs the motor much clutch work don't seem much different and I'm really gentle with the throttle so my question is will it be ok to keep doing it or will it still tear crap up I know what the book says but what do real truckers say
Taking off in 1st ???

What?
You start out in the lowest gear that does not lug the engine and doesn't burn up the clutch.
I hauled 60k die sets and never started out in low, that was only used when I had more than 80k on the deck. It was usually 2nd for most trucks, first for a couple of others.Lepton1 and stillwurkin Thank this. -
Use 1 when loaded or 2 when empty or Low if loaded and starting on an uphill.
How fast does your truck go in the highest gear and at what rpm? -
Just to be clear I meant really gentle on throttle after once off the clutch

At 77,000 lbs I started in 2nd gear up a small hill at a light and stalled.
OopsLepton1 Thanks this. -

ill try 2nd if that don't work either 3rd or 4th till u find a even ground on the clutch and rpms it will click so got to play with it alittle bit

The reason I ask is if you have a truck that only did 62 at 1500 rpm it is geared slower and has more pulling power in the low gears meaning you could start out in a higher gear as compared to a truck that will do 75 at 1500 with 2 more gears to go. The fast truck won't multiply the torque as much and would require a lower numerical gear to begin moving from a stop. The slower the truck the more torque multiplication you have. That's why the really heavy moves those trucks won't run a very high speed but they will move an enormous weight. And some bull haulers moving a not so extreme weight can gear their truck very fast. If you tried to use the heavy truck for the bull wagon you wouldn't get much speed, if you tried to use the bull truck for a super heavy haul it might not even get it to move. Or, more likely, when it needs to go over a mountain it will be unable to do it.Dino soar Thanks this. -
2nd in an 8/13/18, 3rd in a 10/15. You can get going in 5th without stalling with proper control, but you wouldn't want to. If you stall it, that's on you.

Right on I was just taught to always use low when loaded so I didn't know if I would tear anything up
