Job postings without a company name?

Sounds like "most" greedy business owners. "You're making me more money, but I can't pay you more." Yea, ok hoss.

 

well, in the repair trade, as in trucking, your choices are not really all that limited. unless you live in a one horse town...well then....but not in any major city.

 

yeah, i went to (back then) the GM school in MA and got updated on a/c repairs, and the new generations of electronic ignitions and carbs. no other garages were upgrading like i was. he spent money getting a/c garage door banners, and we made, or he made a killing on a/c repairs. i got my usual weekly salary, no commissions.

 

You would probably be surprised how much back channel communication there is in most industries. I talk to my "competitors" pretty frequently, about suppliers, regulations, trends, insurance, lots of stuff. Just because we are in the same industry, doesn't mean we don't talk. And yes, we talk about employees and if I get a negative report from someone I know, that counts. I might give you a shot, but you'd be under more scrutiny, and probably would have to prove yourself above and beyond someone without that negative aspect to their history.

Let me give you an example (as this goes BOTH ways!). I just hired a guy that had left a previous job under a cloud. He had been looking for a job for nearly a year, and had a hard time landing something because of it. I happened to know the outfit and the guy he worked for. Let me describe him charitably as a "cantankerous old fart". This guy has a reputation for running off employees on an annual basis. Because I'd worked with one of those previous guys, I knew the scoop, and was happy to hire the guy. Point is, a bad separation can definitely hold you back, but a good reason for a bad separation can overcome that, too.

Of course you are right, The larger the town and the bigger the industry the less it matters, and the easier it is to make a fresh start.
