Quote: "The firesticks are top loaded so radiating coil is up and away from mirrors and cab and one of the reasons your swr readings are a little higher is due to reflect that the coil is experiencing."

Just a minor point: I've often seen the term "loading coil," and not "radiating coil." I've read that antenna theory indicates the loading coil does not actually radiate much of anything; it only adds electrical length to the antenna in order to get a good match. The radiating part is the job of the stinger.

    No?

I seen a big difference switching to the Wilson 4 foot fiberglass antennas with adjustable tips. I tried to get the Firestik II antennas. Stopped at 3 different Loves and none of them had them.

All of my swr readings are less than 1.5. My radio is working a lot better now. Just trying to figure out how to use the RF gain to better hear what is going on.

All of you folks have been very helpful, thank you.

A term i learned is height is mite..Always run as tall as you can..
There is a amount reflect when coil is low.....
I dont remember what the #'s i saw were but there was something about compareing antenna heights with different lengths of same antenna and taller offered more db due to being more efficient....

It is funny that you say this. I can order the 5 foot Firestik IIs off of Amazon, and I have been wondering if they would work even better. This is open for opinions

Rf gain is basically recieve...Wide open will be the biggest amount of rec and all surrounding noises..Turning it back will decrease all that..
Squelch will just kill static type stuff..Might also affect rec range some to..

What trk?? Look into skip shooters as well...If height limits allow,go 6ft..Both the firestick 11 and ship shooters have tuneable tips..Oh and the skip shooters can be had in different colors..
