You don't have to clutch, but it might make it easier until you get a feel for it. Pre-select the splitter, feather the throttle a little and once the RPMs line up with the ground speed it'll slip right into gear. I find it smoother to do it without the clutch, but you may find it smother with the clutch.

Now when you go from 5 to 4, you'll have to put the splitter up before you move the shifter. Actually, every time you have to move the shifter, you should preselect the splitter position. The manual will tell you not to move the splitter while the gear shift is in the neutral position. I don't know why they recommend that, but I'm sure someone smarter than me could tell ya.

Take it for what its worth but I would watch the wheel base if your going to pull a dump I used to work for a construction company hauling asfault and gravel in a 10 wheel dump but there were some guys doing the same things with trailer dumps but their biggest problems were getting in and out of tight places and powerlines can be a problem as well with trailer dumps also they arent the most stable things in the world. I was running a dozer behind one that was dumping and he was going over I hit it and it came back down on the wheels luckily but rolling is a problem with all dumps. Goodluck with whatever you do.

Yeah I've been thinking about that, what really a bad design it is for that kind of work. I've heard that a truck can tip just with those cherry pickers going too high and to the side without the counterweight they use, and that's just a dude on a steel rod. Putting 30 tons in the air has gotta be a bad idea.

The biggest problems are the people loading them and sticking if some of your load sticks high on one side it will roll thats what saved that guy when I bumped it it shook that sticking down and saved it he wasent real happy about me hitting his trailer but he knew it was on its way over. If I were wanting to dump truck again I would pick up a 10 wheel dump its alot easier to get work for them. From charlotte get on 85 south go to greenville and theres a big auction company down there with 100 acers full of tractors, trailers, dumps and everything else. Stuff has been going for nothing up there. Also the upkeep and insurance on a 10 wheel is alot cheaper and you get to sleep at home for the most part.

Yeah if I knew I was going to stick with dump work that would probably be the way to go. I do want to stick with the Class A path and expand on it. Don't want to get stuck with straight truck experience only. It limits my options down the road. At least with a 5th wheel you can pull anything with a kingpin. It would be nice if there was some sort of a detector that would tell you how level you are.

Yep thats the advantage of the trailer and if you can get steady work for it then it will be a good way to go. I like truck im running but if the money were the same I would drive me a 10wheel dump all day long and im thinking about going back to it even with the difference I can drive one as good as the other but nobody where u unload understands that its a very big pita to jackknife a loaded truck into a hole thats just big enough to squeeze it in straight with a spread axel that sounds like its going to fly out from under the thing but for me the biggest thing is not being with my family. Oh yea tarping and straping in subzero weather aint too fun either.

At most landfills we had spotters that would tell you it was leaning, If it leaned to much to one side they would dig you a hole to level it out. 40,ft in the air leaning is lots of fun. Oh yeah add this to your need to know list. Set your trailer brakes when dumping and leave you tractor brakes released.
Also you may want to buy a truck with an air dump valve for the tractor it makes it much more stable.
If you plan on pulling a frameless dump you need to plan on blocking the fifth wheel.
And keep your hand on the Up/Down lever when dumping. If its starts to lean you can catch it if your quick.
Want to save on weight with your pump set-up? split one of the fuel tanks any good welding shop can do this.
If i were you I would go with a smaller bunk If you were still going to pull a bucket.. Its just to much weight. I had A 02' columbia flattop with a 500 cat and I could come in under 30k With an aluminum tub
With the Combo I see your thinking about with a steel dump you might be up around 35k you have to be smart about it Money or Comfort? your call. Hell with it just haul heavy Like I use to and make a lil extra money

Ok well I'll get to it I guess. Today was a setback, the Kenworth broke my heart.

Took it to an independant shop for a complete lookover. I didn't bring the sheet home, left it at the dealer to give to his mechanic but it was pretty long.

Basically lots of oil leaks, cams, under the turbo, possibly the turbo itself, 1 injector over fueling, the synchronizer is SHOT (thank god it really wasn't me), power steering leak, fuel pump belt. Couple other less serious things.

Basically if put in the shop, about 4 to 7k in repairs depending on the status of the turbo.

So I'm sort of at square one. I test drove the Volvo, didn't like it. Shifter seemed gummy, power steering made that sound it makes when it's low, engine noise in the cab like muffler wasn't quite right, took a long time for air pressure to climb.

On the Kenworth they may either fix everything on the list, or subtract 7k from the price, which actually I would find acceptable (get the truck for 15k instead of 22.4). Doesn't help me with my startup expense account though, only the back end.

Last thing working on was resubmitting my info to the finance company with another driver listed in the company. (This would get me the freighliner Columbia, or anything in the 30k+ range) They only turned me down because I had no experience to go along with my credit rating, but would do it with a driver. So the dealer "gave" me a driver, one of his. But the finance company is calling BS and wanting to know our relationship and check their credit as well to make sure it's not a "straw" purchase. I guess that means where someone who can't be financed gets the truck bought by someone who can. Really I don't see why that's a problem, that's the whole point behind co-signers anyway.

My son got a "snow day" today and had to go with me. Got his first ride in a big truck today, he was far too excited.

I can't say for sure which of us was more disappointed when I told him it didn't look like we were going to get that one.

Hey Boxcar, last night I wrote two long answers to this but the site got slow, gave me page can't be displayed and lost it... TWICE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ARGGGHHH...

Anway, the main points were: Ok I think this company standardizes the loads at 24 tons. Remember this job is set up more like OTR, I probaby will be out 2 weeks per shot. I'm 6'6" so a midroof might be ok, but a flat top would gimp me for life probably lol. I'm probably going to reduce or eliminate my home expenses and put stuff in storage, so the extra comfort would be worth it to me. I'm not going to go with a double bunk though and from what I understand, the top can be taken off that KW. It does have the air release like you mentioned.

I asked my dealer to give me as many disadvantages to the end-dump thing through this broker as he could think of. They use PC-miler which is aggravating. Besides the dead heads, sometimes you have to go out of your way to get the trailer cleaned? Said this was $35 to $70 a pop depending on where you're stuck. Does this happen a lot? Sounds like it cuts quite a bit into the bottom line. He said that lots of crap will come up like that but still insists that after all was said and done, they were still taking 1k to the company and paying the driver about the same per week. So, I'm hoping it's really good considering I'm both!
