I'm thinking about buying a trailer.
2001 28' Jayco 5th Wheel
I pay 1000 a month in Houston for a 1bedroom that I use infrequently. I'm on the road 3 weeks a month or more. My Freightliner has a fixed 5th wheel with the pin dead center between the drive tires. Middle of the tandem. Would I be able to turn with that, or would I have to get a sliding 5th wheel at I'm guessing at a 1000. RV rental space is around $500 a month.

I pull my fifth wheel camper on occasion with my tractor but it’s a single axel with the fifth wheel set just forward of the axel.
I have way more turning room than I can use.
In fact I have more turning room with the tractor then I do when I have my dually under it.
I would think it would work unless you have really long frame overhang passed your rear tandem. -
It's s short wheelbase 215". Frame ends 4" beyond the tires.

Too many variables in truck builds. Your going to have to carefully hook up with a spotter, and turn it around a parking lot. Keep in mind that inclines/declines can have a huge effect on gaps. So make sure you have a solid 8-12 inches.

I took a quick measurement on my fifth wheel camper and it’s 75 1/2 inches from the center of the king pin to the front of the camper.
I’m not sure if that measurement is standard on all campers or not.
Hope this helps.86mechanic, OLDSKOOLERnWV and Tb0n3 Thank this. -
You can always get a pin box extension if there is not enough clearance. Of course they cost between $500-$1,000 depending on 5th wheel.
You will also need a converter for your pigtail. That's easy to make or even buy for less than $50.
Big one for me though is you don't want that 5th wheel pictured. You are not able to stand up in the bed area as the roof is too low. When I got my 5th wheel I thought it would not be a problem, just walk down the steps to dress. Well, it's a royal pain to deal with. I'm looking for another camper for that reason alone.77fib77 Thanks this.
