They cut off first 45 minutes of that video which was that guy looking around the yard for a jiff- lock that actually worked!! They also cut the last 15 minutes of him taking a bath in zep to get all of the 5th wheel grease off of him!

Why would you want video evidence of yourself breaking the golden rule of hostling... NEVER BREAK DOWN A TANDEM!!! That will get you stedy duty of hooking sets for the rest of your career in most yards! :biggrin_25525:

Nice video. I'll have nightmares tonite for sure!

You ain't missing nothing. Those things suck bad. They never work right either. Getting the pintle lined up in -30 weather is enough to make a grown man cry (many have). There is about 1/2 inch margin of error to get that thing lined up (left, right, up and down!!). There should be a special ring in hell reserved for whoever designed that system.

Of course, there are tricks to doing it and after about 100 times you figure it out, but none of the tricks are exactly 'easy' on the equipment. Also, if a certain truck and a certain jiff just don't want to get together, they wont, no matter what you try.

Alot of guys have gotten hurt bad by those things.

if you have trouble with hooking one up - it is usualy because you are doing something wrong.

once you get the hang of them - they are cool.

also - if you get greasy - you are doing it wrong...

(all to often guys are like bulls in China shops - and try and force them to fit etc etc - you have to be gentle)

ok i am going to show my ignorance here and its just because i have no exposure to this... What in world is a jiff....is it like turning a single screw in to a tandem?

They suck, I worked for Roadway in 96. Work for Yellow now and hopefully they will get rid of Jifflocks.

    pretty much -

the point is to have single axle tractors that can "convert" into a tandem axle (and therfore pull a heavy long box...) and vice versa...

and you can take a "jiffed up" tractor with a set of doubles - and go pick up a long - or break down the jiff and hook a third trailer for your triples...

    think about it

34K on tandems (wether they are drive axles or not) or 20K on a single axle....
