Hi everyone. I'm finishing CDL school soon, and trying to decide where to go from here. I know most places pay by the mile, but are there any companies that pay salary? a covenant transport recruiter stopped by our school and talked about some sort of minimum pay that would guarantee $1000 per week, and a dedicated account that paid a daily salary. this sounds pretty good. does anyone else offer something like this? It would help me budget for my family if we could count on a set amount of money each week.

    thanks

From what I understand is the guaranteed minimum is a little bit of a sham because there are so many caveats and ways to deny you that you need to read the fine print very carefully. I remember two years ago when Heartland Express was advertising their guaranteed minimum like crazy all over Craigslist. When I got a copy of the fine print, it gave them every excuse in the book to kick you off of it and put you back on mileage pay.

Where is your location; state & nearest city? West Side Transport has guaranteed minimum weekly pay of something like $1000.00 and you can make more, but not less. This company hires new cdl graduates.

One of their drivers posts on here and said the minimum is easily achievable every week. No silly reasons in fine print to trick the driver.

This is key to note because if you think you’re going to trash around and be available to work only 7 hours a day and take the “minimum guarantee”, you’re in for a rude awakening.

And if you only made the minimum either you had an unfortunate week or your work ethic is causing you to leave money on the table.

I’m curious to know how they factor home time into the equation

Places that want to pay you a flat salary will generally work you to death. I tried it once for 6 months, and I was driving 11 hours a day 6 days a week, and working a total of 16 hours every one of those days loading and unloading my own trailers on top of all the driving. Had I been paid cents per mile for the same work, I would have made twice as much as they were paying me in salary.

My company started new drivers with a $1200 week guarantee. After a few months they dropped it. They lost about half of the drivers and then started it back again. I work for 1 dedicated account on one of the biggest tanker outfits. I think they have as many pay plans as they do customers. Some are mileage, some percentage, some guaranteed minimum. Just ask what are the conditions for getting the guaranteed. Also, talk to working drivers there now. Ask them how hard it is to get the guarantee. The 1 rule I would try never to break, again, is only work somewhere after you have talked to drivers there. You can't count on reading wed ads and not getting screwed.

All depends on the company you work for. There are some decent companies out there. I’m a salaried driver and after a certain amount of revenue I get a percentage of the earnings. So the potential is more. I’m on the road 10 days and home 4 which is Thursday-Sunday. No fine print or anything. I don’t get worked to death either. The most I work generally is a 9 hour day for me. But usually it’s a 8.5 hr day for me. Love my paychecks and I don’t have to run hard either. I think last week I only ran like 1500 miles. But that guaranteed money was in my account so no complaints here. Just gotta do your research and dig deep into these companies because as some of you have said there are some bad ones out there that will take it away from you and put you back on mileage pay.
