There is defiantly a winnowing process in trucking...Staying comfortable and managing stress is probably the most important....Get stressed, lose sleep, make mistakes, your out with the chaff.. If to many drivers make it through this process wages for experienced drivers might stagnate.. You hear a lot of negative talk out their...makes you wonder if it has a function..
You can study your DMV Commercial driver book and the Federal motor Carrier handbook...After that you need hands on practice...As much as you can..

Hopetobeontheroadsoon...man, that's a loooong screen name...if you go into the industry with the attitude that some of the people here have, you will definately fail. It is what it is...make the best of it. Be safe...

One needs to look at every angle to see the big picture.
There are still options in trucking. These guys are getting jobs and going to orientation. They are finding work. I know people are staying at home and can not draw unemployment because the State has no funds left. It might not be as good as it was back in the day, but if it puts food on the table and provides for a family why try to talk someone out of it? If a person is quitting a secure job (I don't think those exist anymore) to take a gamble it would be risky, but if a person has no income and can't find something local why try to tell them how much it has changed for the worse? They already know how much their local has changed for the worse. They already lost their job.

You might have 20 years in trucking with advice on local work, but what about guys with 20 years local work and know there is nothing there for them now? Do what you go to do to provide for your family. Nice to have plans for the future, but better to have food for today.

very true but look at the #s.....this is sick:biggrin_2555::biggrin_2555:

    .26 x 2300 miles = 598.00

    food expence = 100.00

    598 - 22%(taxes) = 466.00

    466-100 = 366.00 a week(bring home)

7 days at 24 hours = 168 hours time spent out on road away

    366/168 = 2.17 per hour

Man this crap is getting way out of hand.... He comes here for help and all you do is run your mouth and slap him down.... I hope they put a stop to this crap very soon. Maybe its time to clean house and ban some of these posters that just wine and talk crap to the new guy wanting help and information. We all should be happy that he is not a dead beat that just wants to sit and collect unemployment and welfare checks...

Go for it.....Follow your dreams with a positive attitude...and you will be OK.
Everyone started as a new driver at one point...
BTW google CDL practice tests.... There are a few websites that have good practice exams for your use. As far as driving the truck listen to your instructor and learn as much as you can in the time frame your there with him or her...

Yeah , maybe we should just shut up and let these newbies throw away a few grand on a trucking school THEN draw unemployment after the company they go to work for folds or cuts it's fleet back . What part of over a million transportation workers unemployed don't you people understand ? Gee , these guys can't see working at a fast food place for $7 an hour . 40 hours that's $280 a week . They'd rather sit around a truckstop half the time and be away from home for maybe $300 a week take home . That's really better money , isn't it ?

It sure is.....They will have a CDL for the rest of there life as long as they don't drop it at renewal time. And they will have more options than working at a fast food joint. You don't Like driving right now right? So you go work at the fast food joint or Wally World....
