I'm 3 months of solo driving as a new driver at this point.
Today I was pulling out of the consignee in a 2 lane exit, there was a truck on the right so I took the left lane. The road kind of curves to the right before coming to a stop sign. As I'm pulling around the other truck I had a bad feeling I didn't have enough clearance. So I crawl up to a point where I only had less than a quarter of my trailer left. It looked like I had enough clearance at this point so I crawled along and within 2 seconds I hit the brakes and just tapped the other trucks side mirror.
The driver comes out and starts freaking out, so we pulled to the shoulder on the side of the road. A cop just happened to be writing tickets to trucks parked on the side of the road, so long story short I filled out some incident report and we switched insurance informations. No ticket given.
Feel kind of stupid, could of been totally avoidable.
I attached some pics to the thread just to show how minor the damage is.
My question is if I go switch companies will they find out about it? Will I lose my job over it?

Happened in Montreal, Canada.
Had my first "incident" today.

You totaled the truck.
Pack your bags.
Whose hand is that? It looks like someone's hand got taken off in the accident and it's still stuck to the mirror.Last edited: Aug 14, 2018

That's not even worth making a report about. You did good by not feeling right and creeping. Do that whenever you are not sure. Just remember to always jerk your trailer before you start driving make sure king pin is locked.

CJ701 Thanks this. -
If you lose your job over that then you're better off without them. My opinion of course. Don't sweat the small stuff.

wow, guys do more damage to their own trucks then that. I can't possibly see that as a job ender.

I would have put something like spray cleaner, a little drop of oil or anything on a rag and wiped it off while the other driver wasn't looking. Even though there's no damage, the other company will probably bill your company a couple hundred dollars for a new mirror.
shogun Thanks this. -
If it had been me you hit like that I would have just waved at you. Guy was a jerk to make such a big deal over this.
DevJohnson, tucker and Cattleman84 Thank this. -
I BROKE and paid cash for many of the older style mirrors learning to back.
If that little rub causes you to be in fear of your job then there is a problem with your Employer. And the other driver is a little bit of a problem as well. I don't mind a little rub on a mirror, no harm no foul. Now if you did not stop and tore it off and so on... well I'll have the Law on you.
Don't worry about it.
There IS however one thing...
A folder with your name is kept in a desk somewhere. When it becomes sufficiently filled or too big, overstuffed or too many negative things big and small against you... You are gone. You will generally see this folder with your name on the tab and holds all the little whoops you committed while working for any given company.
That will happen on your exit talking to. (Not exit interview...)
Some of my whoops cost anywhere between 1000 at times and well over 10,000 at others. It depends on the overall situation.
If anything. Next time you try to play let's see how many trucks can fit in a exit at once, back off and let Mr Big get out knowing you will have room to get out too. Eventually.
One of the biggest whoops was my spouse when she was learning about that last 1/3 of the trailer and the potential damage it can do.
One day she went into fuel pumps wanting out onto the road in a small truckstop near our home. She started turning just a little bit. I eyeballed the right mirrior and barked a command "Stop." She stopped instantly.
The trailer had gone up against one of two steel posts in the center of the entire steel overhead cover common to small gas stations, fuel stops etc. Had she continued to follow through that whole thing would have probably come down.
That rust patch is still there to this day.Lepton1, Farmerbob1, bottomdumpin and 2 others Thank this. -

Had the exact same thought. If the driver is gonna cry over spilled milk you may as well just punch him in the throat. He'll forget about that mirror real quikk.Farmerbob1, FreightlinerGuy, Canadianhauler21 and 3 others Thank this.
