Detroit 12.7 . I'm hearing this screeching /chattering noise right before it purges .After it purges the noise stops , so I know it's the compressor.

Is there a trick to changing the air compressor on these older Detroit? I know get into the back with an extension will be tough . Will I need a strap to hold a heavy compressor before I take all the bolts off?
I have done starter, AC, alternator but not the air compressor.

It should be right up front there. A couple bolts and voila. Mine went out once and I walked to a truck parts store got the part for $20 and a driver changed it out for me in under 15 minutes.

Huh? $20 for the Air compressor? This is is about a $650 part with the core . I am not talking about the governor. I can easily change that

Yeah, he's thinking governor. I changed mine on a cat. They are pretty simple to do. I used a strap just to keep it from falling. Left it hooked up and used it to hold the new one while I muscled it in to place as well. Just easier, I think.

Great response . Almost like the #### starter with a strap . The gears was easy to mesh from the starter to the flwy wheel, why i recently changed the starter .Is this compressor gear easy to mesh with the compressor gear .? I mean, will I have to force it in to meet the other gear ? I hope I explained it right

You sure its the compressor and not the unloader chattering a bit before it unloads? Hate to see someone spend big bucks without at least seeing if there's a cheaper fix.

    Where is the unloader located?
The compressor is also leaking a lot of oil from the bottom

No need to force it. Just turn it til the gears line up. Slide it the rest of the way in and turn it to line up the bolt holes. Easy really.
