@Heavyd I am in need of your services again! I had a guy helping me the other day on a 2003 Volvo VNL with a Cummins Isx 450. While I was doing some other work he was changing the alternator, I heard cussin and yelling. Well come to find out he didn’t unhook the battery before he started and got a wrench stuck from the hot on the alternator to ground. He got it free after about 15 seconds. But now the truck is acting very strange. It will crank but not start... I have a code sid 251 fmi 2 that won’t clear. And a fuel shut off code. Going through the dash it will not allow me to access any of the other modules. And now with a DMM if I have it hooked to ground I can touch just about any spot in the engine compartment and get voltage. So I’m assuming I have a short somewhere. I am worried this may have burnt up the ECM.. what can I test to figure this out?

Disconnect the alternator to see if that small trace voltage goes away. As for the engine, check all your fuses. I have no idea where Volvo puts their wiring or fuses. You can also try disconnecting your batteries and reconnecting in case something electronic is locked up from the voltage fluctuations.

    SAR Thanks this.

Coming from the main ground on the starter it’s roughly 4 gauge and then it changes to about a 8 gauge wire and bolts to the block with several other grounds.

Get under there and inspect all of the cabling. I had to replace 100 ft of the stuff of various gauges on my ProStar. I was having all sorts of electrical issues, discovered a bad ground when the alternator went teets up. Then I started digging, and found most all of the cabling from the battery box was green end to end. I replaced, electrical issues went away. If you can see copper wire on any of the cabling, just replace it, as odds are, it is no good. When you replace, just make sure no copper is visible. I used dialectic grease and liquid electrical tape on my cable at the ring connectors.
