When heading northbound out of the US back into Canada, the company I worked for didn't always tell me which commercial crossing they wanted me to use. I always used the commercial crossing that was the shortest (which was usually always the fastest too) route to my destination in Canada. As dispatch knew my route and where I was going, it seemed they would pick the same route, and there was no problem.

Sometimes, when they didn't tell me what crossing they wanted me to use, they would pick a border crossing that wasn't on the shortest or most direct route, but with me not knowing this, I still crossed at the crossing that was the shortest route. I never had a problem at the border, ever.

Just recently, someone said that it could earn major fines if you get "caught" crossing at a commercial crossing that wasn't the commercial crossing listed under the ACI. I could see how this might be an issue, but again, I was never stopped or questioned about it by Canadian border officials (I think I likely only did it maybe 2 or 3 times in 2 years).

Short of me driving down to the border (only about 45 mins away) and asking a border guard about it, does anyone here know anything about the penalties for crossing at a place that is different from the one on the ACI? Has anyone here ever been warned/fined for doing it? Is it that big of a deal?

    Thanks

  3. It's more of a security issue. They want a copy of your paperwork at the gate you cross. It streamlines the crossing process.

When you don't have your paperwork copy at the gate you cross, they have to go find it . It's a P.I.T.A for them to figure out who you are and what you are doing at the crossing.

We had a driver cross at the wrong gate and it took 2hrs to get paperwork processed to the gate he did cross at.
Unless you have an issue on your truck, they won't have a cow. It only causes the boss to have a headache when border calls to find out if you work this outfit.

    Just plan ahead next time

Thanks. The ACI makes it all electronic though. They scan the bar code and the load info comes up on the screen in front of them. We/I were also set up for FAST.

You are in the office, or were, for your company? Does it or did it happen a lot that your drivers cross at the wrong gate? There was never any mention of some kind of punitive action by Canada Customs because your driver(s) crossed at the "wrong" spot according to the ACI?

The fines started earlier this year. 2000 per infraction. Your company better get it together and set you up at the correct port. Your entry will be in aci, but it should be set to the correct port. Do you haul the same load all the time? I cross 5 nights a week FYI.

  6. Like @upnorthwpg said. Ya. Fines are getting more and more. Drivers are disregarding what is told to them. So it will travel down hill if the company is cost a buck.

I was both. Office / company then driver. It is a slippery slope when your wearing alot of hats.

My one driver was a pain. He drove from North Dakota all the way to Montana cause he says.
1: he didn't want to buy fuel in Canada.
2: he has a waitress he like to visit.

I'm glad he didn't abandon my truck on the Canadian side. He was paid very very well. Had cake runs and pissed and moaned all the time.

Got tired of the drama and poor loads from Canada.

Just keep to the gates your supposed to enter on. It saves alot of headache on you and the border guys.

Request your border crossing of choice when possible. I know some preferred crossing Port Huron Mi. over Detroit Mi. when the miles were of little consequence.

They take it very seriously. I’ve heard mention of 5 grand fines. They want one even empty.

Thanks. So, enforcement got serious earlier this year? My ex-company out of Winnipeg was interested in as little effort as possible and not being bothered to tell the drivers where we were expected to cross was one of the examples. I suggested they notify all drivers about this rule as I had never heard of it before, after about 5 years of long haul into the US from Maine to Washington state. Other drivers I spoke to knew nothing of it either.

As for loads, no, the loads were anything and everything that would fit in a van and I would mainly cross back into Canada anywhere from ON to BC, mainly AB and MB.

Have to have the custom broker assign it to the correct port before aci is made. If broker assigns Windsor and you aci it to sarnia there will be a mismatch and a possible issue. I don't know what happens I just do it the way they want it done.

Write your port of crossing directly above or beside your pars code when you are sending in your paperwork. You tell them where you will be crossing. If your company has any issue with that, have them tell you which ones are preferred so you know what to put for future loads. An example might be if you have a yard in Chatham Ontario and can cross either Windsor or sarnia, they may want everything coming in at Windsor in case of possible relays which may be necessary in near future. Generally, they won't care.

The warning period ended on dec 31. Fines started Jan 1. I can’t tell you how many fines I’ve seen handed out there, it’s been a lot. And that’s one port. As has been mentioned, I would ask my dispatch which port the entry is set up for. Or call the broker myself and confirm.
