I don't know about that.......I saw a guy roast one real good. Then after the rebuild he wanted to know why he shouldn't pull Sandstone Mountain in high gear at 75 mph grossing 80K. His attitude was.........It will do it. Why should I drop a gear.
-
No.........there's a guy that is putting a complete kit togther for this. The crankshaft, liners and rods are out of a standard C-18. Then they use a custom piston to get rid of some weight for high RPM operation. So the whole assembly has to be re-balanced. The C-18 liners will drop into a B model block, you just need the C-18 O-rings and packing.
-
Are you sure he isn't using a C model block? The B model crank journals are most likely to small for a C-18 crank?
-
3406B....3406C.....3406E........C-15/C-16/C-18 all have the same size and part # Main bearings.........the rod journal is the difference between them all.
So the C-18 crankshaft will drop in all the 34 series 6 cylinder engines with a little work on clearancing the pan rail. -
Are you talking roundness of the journals or width?
I've seen and held the two bearings and there is no way you could confuse the two. The C is wider than the B.
I might be thinking rod bearing not main bearings. Wouldn't that still be a problem?Last edited: Feb 18, 2009

If they take the same part # bearing.........the width and diameter would be the same. This is the main bearings. The rod bearings are much smaller in the B model. The 3406C.....3406E and C-15/C-16 use the same rod and main bearings. The C-15 Acert and the C-18 use totally different rod bearings from the earlier engines. So the rod journal is a different size in them also. So the connecting rod will not interchange between the earlier engines.

This is probably where the confusion is! That and my memory sucks..
.
So with doing what your saying is this gonna make like a stroker motor, like the 383 stroker gas engine? -
The bore and stroke combinations have to stay with each engine configuration. You can install the C-18 complete bottom end in a B block.........but you can't install just the crankshaft and use the smaller bore piston and liners for a stroker motor. The wrist pin location is different between the different stroke engines, so this makes it so you have to match crankshafts with the proper piston & rod, otherwise you would have the piston above the top of the block at TDC. The bore is different on the C-16/C-18, but the outer diameter of the liners is the same as a B models liner. So it will fit in the block and seal. The bore is the same on the 3406B......3406C......3406E....C-15........C-15 Acert. Now the C-15 Acert has the same stroke of the C-16.......so this is a stroked from the factory C-15.
What CAT did was make the liner wall thickness thinner for the C-16 and C-18 to fit the bigger pistons in it. Not increase both the inner and outside diameter of the liner and have to retool for the block machining between the different engines. -
Mr.Haney...I still say he or they will learn really quick and drain the bank account a bit too.Maybe people are just dumber than I think they are?I'll just be glad it isn't my money. Do you or anyone have a set of 58 injectors they want to sell?
