Ok, here's the word at the Knight termenals. Layoff's
The rumer is that because of the frieght slow down Knight Trans is looking to cut cost. The average truck is doing about 1000 miles a week. Some say they are looking at closing some of there 23 terminals. If you look at where they are, most are with in 500 miles of the next. There is also talk of laying off office people. Mostly Dispatchers. Like every other dry frieght carrier they are losing drivers because they just don't have any freight for them. They are doing very little hiring of new drivers. So there Dispatchers are running about 15 drivers each. Giving them and exces of dispatchers. What will happen is anybodies guess. but fact is, Things are shaking at Knight.
Non of this affects Knight Refrigerated. They only have 5 terminals and are hiring drivers left and right. A good driver here will have no problem doing 3000+ miles a week. They are however being very picky about who they hire.
Just another sign that this is not the time to be getting into trucking. Frieght for dry vans and flats sucks. And refer companys are being very picky about who they hire.

I understand the sentiment that it isn't a good time to get into trucking right now I really do.
Let's look at the bigger picture.
2.6 million jobs disappeared last year. This year at least that many (probably more than that) will disappear this year.
There is no industry that will be "good" to get into this year.
It is very possible that someone will get into the trucking industry and end up owing money to a school and can't get work. That is also possible in every line of work right now. So what's the answer? Give up? Go on welfare and move in with family? people have to try.
There is always going to be some level of consumer consumption in this country. There is a minimum level of goods and services that will be consumed. Therefor there will always be a minimum level of goods that will need to be shipped. The trucking industry absolutely will downsize to meet that level. Different companies will use different approaches to downsizing. Not every new guy will be fired (some will). But a lot of problem children that companies have been putting up with because they needed them will find themselves sitting at home blaming the new guy for the results they caused.
Also the companies who don't have the connections to get the freight or have bad reputations or haven't managed their cash flow properly etc. will cease to exist. The companies who used them for their freight will go to the other carriers who are still around. It takes time for an equilibrium to be realized but it will be. Likely not until the shippers finish their downsizing.
Just my .02 and probably all it's worth.panhandlepat and homerhardfart Thank this. -
Hey Overdrive how is knight treating you???
-
#### and to think that I just had a 3,000 mile week.

Thank god they have been cutting some of the DM, most aren't worth the stains in your underpants. -
Yeap.
Just found out they are laying guys off, well firing them out of Tulare because they "aren't running enough miles" even though they are running all the miles that Knight gives them. -
They said they are cutting 200 tractors from the fleet.
I think they can downsize drivers through attrition and Tulare does a lot of firing due to log book violations and Idle percentages so I think the rumors are just that, rumors
All most carriers would have to do is cut down on recruiting to trim any driver fat. If anyone gets the hook it will be support staff which have to be paid for showing up. Piece rate drivers don't cost much to sit at a truck stop and run part time.panhandlepat Thanks this. -
Headed to Squire for orientation on Mon 23 Feb and to Knight after all that's over with. Wonder if Knight will have anything in a few months after all the training with Squire is over with.

The firing in Tulare makes little sense. I know the are firing out of Tulare, but what has me puzzled is that they have had all sorts of ads in the Visalia paper for drivers wanted...???
-
Any job these days is worth taking. Stay safe and learn as much as you can.

I asked my friend who works for them and she says they are bringing drivers in the offices and telling them that they will be looking at drivers logs, productivity, Hygiene, safety training etc.. and getting rid of the ones that don't measure up to their I think it was called, a 5 star program?
That's why people are getting the boot while others are hired.
