In all the years I ran down there never really had a problem. I did see my share of snakes, gators, and wild hogs but never felt threatened.
You just have to be aware of your surroundings.IluvCATS and Sirscrapntruckalot Thank this. -
I was always looking for alligators the times I went down there - never saw one

Same thing in Arizona, and New Mexico when you see the signs warning about scorpions, snakes, and other things that will kill you painfully with a bite or sting.
This ain't Lake Placid, nor are alligators the huge human eaters Hollywood an the news like to act like they are. I live on a alligator refuge. The alligators will avoid you more often or not unless you spook them, corner them, etc.
Crocs tho...aggressive buggers. Far more so then an American Alligator( i didn't name them blame....smart science type people).
Short form of this post : Use commonsense an you will 98% of the time have no issues. Don't an your ### will get eaten an your story and missing corpse will be used to scare others in the future.
On that note...sleep tight and don't let the alligators bites.
Sirscrapntruckalot - 78% of statistics are made. Most likely including this one.
PS - Alligator tastes like chicken.IluvCATS, Oldironfan, austinmike and 1 other person Thank this. -

Cracks me up how people lose their minds over alligators, sharks an the like.
Shark attacks - According to the International Shark Attack File (ISAF), between 1958 and 2016 there were 2,785 confirmed unprovoked shark attacks around the world, of which 439 were fatal. In 2000, there were 79 shark attacks reported worldwide, 11 of them fatal. (Bold is courtesy of Wikipedia) source: Wikipedia -
Alligator attacks - The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission estimates that a state resident's odds of being seriously injured in an unprovoked alligator incident are roughly one in 2.4 million.Jun 15, 2016. - Source: National Geographic
Your more likely to die to the following..or at lest be attacked..
1. Mosquitoes
2. Snakes
3. Dogs
4.Crocodiles..they are decidedly not very nice or welcoming. Keep in mind they are also mostly found in places like Africa where the people still use rivers and other water sources for their cleaning, cooking, drinking, etc. So far more chances of getting eaten by a croc. No so with the alligator
5. Hippopotamus
6. Tsetse Flies

Anyhow...I found it interesting...perhaps another will also.
Sirscrapntruckalot - You don't have to be the fastest guy when running from a pissed off critter, you just have to be fast enough to stick your leg out in front of the others in your group. Reason #1 to never go in the wilds alone. .06driver, Feedman, Tall Mike and 1 other person Thank this. -
Was there any gator nuggets on that fish platter? If not I'd be upset.

I am more attentive in NM and Arizona vs Snakes etc. The Rattler is the one that gets me going more than anything. I can probably take it if it holds still with the .45 but I rather not.
I ran the Gulf and Florida quite a bit and remember those signs. Nary a one in my time down that way. Now the skeeters on the other hand. Some of those are impressive if I tried to explain just how big they get on the windshield the mods would give me a 2 week suspension for rabble rousing.
The worst problem I recall against anything would be either a wasp or a hornet. I don't know which one got me in my spine at 90+ near Binghampton. The trailer got away from me on dry pavement as I spun in the seat after thinking I got shot. I think some of the rubber I laid down across all the lanes are still there to this day. The hospital there took a look and say yep, you got hit and nope you stay a while. We keep eye on you. Heres dinner.
That and three trailer tires. Boss was not happy. Cost me two weeks pay on those three back then.
Forget the big stuff. It's the wee ones that gets ya.jon69, IluvCATS, MACK E-6 and 1 other person Thank this. -
x1Heavy Thanks this.
