Because of my current job and obligations, I will need to get my CDL in New York State. After that I have no obligations to anyone and have no real intention of sticking around the Empire State.
Any thoughts from the veteran truckers out there on ideal places to call “home?” I suspect taxes figures strongly into this in addition to proximity to the trucking company’s terminals right? Also is it as simple as registering for a mailing address in that new state/locality or do they need evidence of physical address? My current plan is just to hit the road and see where the loads take me...
Best states to call “home” for OTR truckers

Texas or Nevada; no state personal income taxes and no food taxes in Nevada.
Lots of good trucking jobs in both states.

In Nevada the least you can get away with proving residency is an affidavit showing you rent a room from someone. You and the person renting the room must sign it; then you can switch your cdl to Nevada. Not sure how Texas does it.CJ701, BigDog Trucker, PossiblyDelulu and 1 other person Thank this. -
If I had a choice . I think Tennessee around Knoxville simply because I run north and south. Would put me home during the week. Lots of nice places everywhere but need to be on a busy path.Weather is better south of Chattanooga no snow. You need to get out and see for yourself what feels right. Beware of beautiful women in cold and snowy places. That is unless you enjoy all that ice and salt and rust and Taxes. No wonder everyone’s so Cranky up north!! My Truck always runs faster when it’s southbound for a reason.

If tax purposes....Texas, South Dakota are two popular places. China hit on Vegas.
Truckers and rv'ers are generally very different kinds of folks. There is a subset of the RV community known as full-timers, and as the name implies they live and travel full time in their RV. Most of the full timers love Texas and South Dakota. Taxes and the ability to not have to have a home or live there. So works for them for mail, etc. Places there will give you an actual physical address vs a p.o. box. Also will forward your mail to you, and all that kind of fun stuff.
If you plan to plant roots, perhaps you can tell us more about what you mean by a "good home" for truckers. Lanes? Companies? Tax purposes? Running from the law? Hiding from Child Support? Want a winning pro sports team? Etc etc...you get the point. (The child support and law are humor, no offense is meant). If I'm way off base feel free to ignore my post. lol.
Good luck finding a good place. Lots of them out there to choose from.

Another vote for TN. Central location means lots of freight passing through there in all directions. No state income taxes there either, pretty countryside in the east too. I would move tomorrow if it was possible.
