Hello everyone, I have been trucking since the beginning of the year (March) and it's been great so far. After finishing training I found myself pulling a skateboard. The physical activity is great but I'm getting tried of throwing tarps. I want to try hauling a tanker, preferably in the western 11 states (domicile located in San Diego, CA), but I am finding a harder time than I thought I would looking for a suitable company. The companies I have found either require more experience or a higher minimum age; I am only 21 but already have my HAZMAT and tanker endorsements, and also TWIC.

Does anyone have any recommendations for companies that might take a driver like me? Any and all input/advice will be appreciated.

Coastal Transport in San Diego sometimes hires new cdl grads. so you have a chance there. Normally, they want 1 yr. experience, so it may depend on the terminal.

Pacific Tank Lines - ad has 12 mos. experience "preferred" & does not have "required."

Thank you for quick replies, Chinatown. I called all the aforementioned companies and left messages, with the exception of Coastal Transport, as their age requirement is 23. I will report back once I receive calls back.

Ok first things first not all or even most tanker work is hands off. You will most likely be doing some form of loading/unloading. So that does mean you will be dragging hoses, fittings, working a pump, climbing up and down tanks etc.

Now the fact that you are under 25 takes you out of most hazmat work. But some work isn't hazmat like folks would think like bulk oil.

San Diego is a tuff market for a rookie tanker yanker in your positon, Orange/LA would be easier to break into.

I'd stay away from Coastal or Pacific Tank Lines in Las Vegas if they are hauling gasoline. They are one of the lower paying companies with high turnover. Also, I can tell you from experience that these companies were always short on payment that my company refused to do business.

Bumping this topic as I'm in almost the exact same position as OP. I've had my CDL since I was 21, got all my endorsements and TWIC the next year. Now I've just turned 25 and am really wanting to put them to use.

I have a clean MVR and 2.5 years of experience, but the first company that I called here (San Diego) wanted 2+ years of tanker experience.

I also called JBTS, they took down my name and number and said they'll have someone call me. I can't seem to find any more info on them or what companies they work with.

I've read bad things about both PTL and Superior...PTL I might stay away from, but I'm very tempted by Superior, as they say on their listing that they have a great pay package ($27/hr + OT), great schedule (5-2-5-3), and 6 weeks of training. This is in Huntington Beach, I'm definitely open to Orange County if it is easier to break into there.
