They are soybeans. The spikes you see on the reel are called fingers. They rotate around and help pull the plants into the sickle bar on the header to be cut off.

When you harvest soybeans you run a flex draper or flex auger and what that does is follows the contour of the field to cut the plants off close to the ground because that is where the pods start.

If the beans are short you will get some header loss because the material coming in is just not enough to clear the sickle bar and tends to spill out. They do make air bars that mount to the front of the header to blow the soybeans in to keep a clean cutter bar and minimize header loss.

They are cutting the beans around my house right now. I was gonna do some things outside but standing in the shop looking at what's floating around in the air I'm staying inside.

Been having so much trouble with my eyes lately it's just not worth it. Had to yank out the lenses to sleep last night.

@SAR you guys ever run the row crop bean heads. They were popular in the late 70's early 80's. Looked like a corn head with fingers to pull the plant up.
