That’s what I thought! But, everybody was saying they thought the rules applied to the status of the driver...

Anyone care to elaborate on what bonded warehouses are good for? How they fall under cabotage? (Or not?)

I got nothing. But I'm sure a Frequent Poster will be along soon to explain it in detail.

A bonded warehouse allows product to enter the country physically, but not be imported. I would haul frozen French fries in bond from Medicine Hat to various places in the US (Yuma, Nogales, San Diego, etc.) to a bonded warehouse where they are cross-docked to a Mexican-bound truck. Likewise, I would load Mexican produce bound for Canada. The goods are never imported into the US, but do transit the country.

I understand that part. Here's more what I was referring to. And did years ago when I first started pulling reefer.

Customer has their own bonded warehouse in Detroit. Canadian and Mexican produce is shipped here and the orders are put together. They told us it is legal for a Canadian to pick up there (detroit) and haul it to various places in the USA. Did it for about 2 years before the hammer came down. Tons of us were doing it and I never hid anything from cbp when going in empty I told them exactly what I was doing and it was all good. Until it wasn't. There was no moving of American grown produce being shipped to these bonded warehouses in Detroit. So.......... legit? They told us it was because it didn't make sense to haul it from the bonded warehouse in Texas then clear it into Canada then put it together here then do customs again to put it into USA.

I quit doing it all together after that day. It just makes me uncomfortable.

Years back I used to bring meat loads to get inspected at pembina Nd and leave at the truckstop for a guy who ran California that way he could turn and burn right back to Cali .. I did it off and on for years and told customs what I was doing then out of the blue it became a big no no

I used to show up at Canada Customs with meat after Agriculture Canada ( I forget correct bureau name)office was closed. Customs would clear me without inspection by health depto_O
Made a habit of it to avoid daytime delays and traffic at Windsor

Now they have a yard for you to park in at the meat inspection place at Windsor. It doesn't tell you if it is a skip lot or re-inspect until you get the blue stamp. There is a website you enter your pars or transaction # to find out once you cross. The officer at primary won't tell you either. No way out anymore. Of course maybe that's just for me, I am a real favourite crossing at Windsor... or Sarina for that matter lol
