A couple yrs ago I planned on doing hotshot!! I got my MC/DOT authorities,, the application fees through FMCSA $300 each application MC/DOT, and paid $135 UCR registration!! Was told direct from FMCSA that all I had to do to be legal was get my commercial ins, and file that with them, I got a quote, was gonna have to have $2600 down and $900 a month, was unsure about leaving my job to start something Not knowing if it would work out, I had planned on taking my vacation time off to try it, but instead had to use my vacation time leaving state and ended up having to pay for a funeral instead of using money for my insurance!!! So it also burnt up my scheduled time off, if I would have still tried it I would have had to quit my current job to start it!! I still have my authorities!! And still want to do this!! When you book freight loads does the company you pick up from supply all the needed paperwork, such as any paperwork/ BOL I understand the BOL and what it does!!! Just didn’t know if that’s something the carrier has to create or if the company you pick up from has that with any other paperwork that goes with the loads you book??

Before we get to that... What sort of vehicle do you plan on using? A 1/2 ton pickup will not last. It's simply not made for commercial use. And if you have a 3/4 or 1 ton, depending on the setup you will need a class A license....

Short answer.... depends. Sometimes the shipper supplies all necessary paperwork, sometimes receiver supplies it to the carrier before the load is picked up, sometimes the carrier has to make their own. Ultimately, it's the driver's responsibility to ensure they have documentation of what they are hauling, where it's coming from, and where it's going to.

Usually yes, the shipper supplies the shipping papers.

Now, not to burst your bubble bu,t you say you applied a couple years ago for your authority but never actually filed insurance. After a period of 90 days from your initial application for motor carrier authority if the FMCSA has not received insurance filings they reject the application and you forfeit the filing fee. To get authority at a later date you need to start all over again. So, unless you had filed and maintained insurance you do not still have your authority, the US DOT number may be registered to you but a DOT number without an active MC number is worthless to haul for-hire freight with.

Also, I would get a new insurance quote as the rates have skyrocketed even in the last year. Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

Yes!! I recently contacted FMCSA I have to file my biennial (MCS-150) and register my DOT # as inactive!! But when I actually start using it I will have to reapply and pay the $300 app fee, the MC # is still current!! My DOT will remain the same # but will have to pay application fee again to bring DOT# current!!

There's no fee to update your DOT#
