Not illegal in Kansas, the problem is that they are becoming worthless if you want to listen to police, fire, ems. Most of them have moved to using coded (scrambled) systems.

I always had a scanner as long as I can remember. Of course most of that time I was a LEO. After leaving law enforcement, until a few years ago still had one, running constantly. Wife liked it, since she's a dispatcher, it helps her keep up when she's on days-off. However since the moved to using scrambled, that's came to a halt.

It's not like an 18 is going to rob a bank. Use truck parking if you do.

I was watching TV last week and I'm pretty sure it was a cell phone conversation come over the TV loud and clear. First time that has happened.

The guy was talking with his boss I think, the way he talked. He said I'll be there in about an hour and get my money. :)

Ive listened to scanners most of my life. When digital channels came on combined with black combat channels where you hear nothing at all there is no point.

With that said online there are a few thousand sources still of LEO, FIRE< EMT, FAA CENTER and Approach-Departure. How long they will hold up? Who knows. Once in a while the USAF puts out Doom 61 or so from a strike B52 off one of our coasts for a publicly collectable radio transmission in the 235 or so megahertz block for the world to hear. I managed to follow and capture the last one somewhere with the assistance of those who know what they are doing in that world.

Even though the beloved scanner is kaput, it is still possible to monitor a certain number of sources in real time.

I have one. Everything is illegal according to the police. They can make it up if they want. It's good to have to know what is going on around you.
