If i owned a transport company and was choosing new drivers i would hire guys like yourself first because you've proven that you can cope with multi deliveries the only adjustments you'd need to make would be time management being able to have the ability to go from one large city to another with time to spare deliver your cargo load up and deliver the return load. Getting used to just mainly driving all day as compared to shorter delivery routes like coke where its from store to store, i know cause my second truck driving job was delivering coke as well doing muli drops the most i did in one day was 40 stores although they were all close together basically down the one road. That was the best training i ever got from there i progressed to semi work as the company i worked for had multiple contracts all over the country including supermarket distribution so what i'd do is put my name down to work during any public holiday when they were short on drivers that's how i got my semi trailer experience from there i progressed on to doing regional and then OTR.

He's in Jay, Florida which is right on the Alabama line practically. He'll have plenty of choices if he decides to run the roads.

I called Werner for information. I don’t have training yet but getting the job at coke (start next week) I will be driving a semi truck. I figure six months or a year experience will help.

I assumed I would get my CDL and just go out for a few days and come back for a few days, gaining experience and spending time with the family. Companies I spoke to want orientation four weeks training and be gone much longer. Local jobs here pay a little less than I would make OTR.

My wife retires in three years and she wants for us to team up so I call companies asking three questions
    1) can I be home more now and in three years be out for months
    2) can I train my wife when she gets her CDL in three years
    3) will local experience count because if I can’t go out for a few days and be home for a few then I will have to go out OTR before my wife retires and put time in to train her

I didn’t know there were so many companies.

If you want to train your wife, do this. Contact companies that run teams and tell them you want to be your wife's trainer after she completes cdl school. Ask when you should start so you'll be a qualified trainer under their guidelines.
Quest Global loves husband wife teams and they waive the 3 mos. experience requirement for the wife as long as the husband has over 3 mos. experience. You'll start right then running teams from day one. They do lots of west coast runs; mostly west coast runs.
Benny Whitehead Trucking in Eufaula, AL will hire both of you as a team also. They do lots of produce runs to and from California. This company hires new cdl grads, so they get a good deal with you having experience and your wife a new cdl grad.

your better companies will require to operate in 3 states to count your experience as otr if not they will send you with a trainer or may not be an option so no job .....i never understood that but my insurance requires that ........ any moron can drive up and down an interstate except for mountains there pretty much the same .... I think the city driving is better experience but the insurance companies run this industry

Which is easier...to drive through the Rockies or through skinny streets in some big city? Trip planning, you can pick that up easily if you have decent work ethic.

    Keithdabarber and misterG Thank this.

To someone that hasn’t done the Rockies The skinny streets would be the choice. But I have to conquer this so I can be the best I can be! I went in West Virginia after my first year and climbing hills and mountains beat me up. And going down wasn’t a good experience didn’t drop those gears!

I'm looking to do something similar. In a few years I wan to go OTR myself and maybe have my wife as a passenger during the summer.
Though I already have 16 years, local, experience. Operating in MN, WI, and IA. Driving straight trucks, and semis with 28', 40', 48' and 53' trailers. As well as a couple stints with sleepers pulling flats hauling live trees and a couple seriously expensive CNC wood lathes.

If you ran local in West Virginia, there's absolutely no point in you going into a trainer's truck of a bottomfeeder mega carrier. Odd's are they will have very few "trainers" that could even help you. Anything you need to learn can be taught you in orientation.
