I’ve asked at least a dozen people this question, looked it up on various state sites. And still no real answer.
What is the minimum number of chains you’re required to carry on your truck to remain legal in Cali?
I don’t care about road conditions, or having to put them on. I understand the difference between Max chain and not. I just want to know the minimum number required to carry during winter
Chain requirements, how many do you carry to stay legal in Cali?

It’s gonna be a long day :/
I can buy all I need right here, $65 a bag.
Or be a bag or 2 short. And pay $100 a bag at our shop. -
Not really. But eliminating it from a list of states to haul from. Pretty much limits my ability to see Washington on a decent schedule.
I can get WA loads out of Cali all day. Good paying loads. -
6 single chains is the minimum you need for any western state.
4 on drives, 2 on trailer for 5 axles combination.stwik, otterinthewater, Robert Eroica Dupea and 3 others Thank this. -
$185 for 3 bags sounds a lot better than $300 for something I’ll probably use only during extreme need, if at all.
I have yet to chain this year. Luck has been on my side.Oxbow Thanks this. -
This week there is snow coming to CA, OR, WA, MT, ID, UT. I’m gonna be heading thru 4 of those beginning 12/26
