Yeah Pilot is the company everyone loves to hate but it almost seems like there is one at every exit. Very convenient. Hardly have to think at all about a fueling location when considering the route.

These discounts are amazing. If you pay the regular cash price at the pump and after having seen the prices of what others pay, you can't help the feeling of being treated like a worse sort of customer. Is it not true that in order for those discounts to be possible, the retailers must charge more with cash price all other customers unaffiliated with any discount programs, so actually by paying cash, you subsidize the programs and mega carriers? You could almost ask, if that's fair. Better yet, instead of questioning any fairness of it, hurry up and sign up for those discounts. If everybody does though, who are the retailers going to make the profit off of ? Not that I care... but hopefully no longer me.

According to Wikipedia, Pilot/FJ is the largest truck stop chain by locations (550+), followed by Love’s (470+), and then TA/Petro (271). However, as most of us know, some Love’s locations are only for cars. I think Love’s plan is to catch up to Pilot/FJ because at the moment they are quickly building brand new truck stops all over the nation. TA/Petro is experimenting with small fuel stop locations called “TA Express.”

I remember reading a NASTC document that said fuel stops make most of their profits from selling items inside the store such as coffee, donuts, hot dogs, etc. This starts to make sense when some of the smaller truck stop chains sometimes do not accept the rewards card at the pumps. So if you want your points/shower, you must walk in the store, making it more likely you will head out the fuel stop with a cup of coffee and a snack.

The NASTC document also explained that they get good fuel discounts because they negotiate with millions of gallons each month. This same idea also applies to mega carriers. In the seminar, the main speaker mentioned that NASTC is mostly useful for small fleets because bigger fleets, say, over 100 will eventually figure out how to negotiate their own fuel.

The plant builds the truck according to the build sheet from the salesman. So between the salesman and the person at the company doing the ordering they must have overlooked the tank placement on the sheet. You can spec the tank on either side and what location you want it in. My friend in Oklahoma gets his on the right side on his 389’s because he wants the big fuel tank on the driver side because it looks better going down the road. More people are spec’ing theirs like the truck in the pic below so that when they delete the system they already have 2 equal size fuel tanks under the bunk.

The only reason Love’s doesn’t charge for parking is because their lots are much smaller compared to TA/Petro and Pilot/FJ. It wouldn’t surprise me if Love’s eventually starts charging for a few of their parking spaces. It’s a trend that is going on nationwide. Even no-name truck stops and in the middle-of-nowhere are trying to cash in. Hahaha.

Maybe they have it in the event the pump malfunctions. I tried to get DEF once in Grand Ledge, MI from the pump but it was frozen. I ended up buying a jug then
