Straight from the horse’s mouth here, goes into more detail regarding what the ELD is required to do.

This is especially important because it also covers those who drive glider trucks.
Look at the bottom of Page 5,question 10. -
No, it’s a Paccar MX13
They said replacing the EGR cooler was a ##### on this motor. A cummins would’ve been easier.
The reprogrammed ECM was also rigged by removing one of those little pins, screwing up the signals being sent to/from the EGR valve. The faulty EGR valve caused damage to the EGR cooler = $10,000

I dont care about the trees or the yellow bellied, ring tailed, purple chested, 3 eyed, endangered lizard.
I care about getting fined. It was the alteration to the emissions equipment by a previous owner, that caused the truck to break dow.HoneyBadger67 and nikmirbre Thank this. -
Before buying the truck did you have it inspected by a mechanic that you trust?

The bold type helps me realize just how serious you are.Sirscrapntruckalot, sawmill, snowman_w900 and 1 other person Thank this.

Already answered this. No.
Even after it broke down, 3 mechanics, including a T/A mechanic didnt notice what was wrong. They all thought it was a leaking hose.
I then towed it to Kenworth. Several of their mechanics with their computer program couldn’t diagnose the system had been hollowed out.
They even used the resources of their people at the plant where they make these engines.
It wasnt until after they replaced the EGR valve, EGR cooler, and the ECM, that they realized the after treatment stuff had been hollowed out.
If you know how to check for this please let me know. The shop mgr at KW said theres no way to detect it until the truck fails.

The regulation hasn’t been changed regarding VIN numbers. If you’ve bought a new glider, regardless of motor, you must run an ELD. They issued guidance more recently that says if the motor is pre 2000, you don’t have to run an ELD. I don’t know why they did that but, guidance is not regulation. So, will you get nailed for not having an ELD in your glider or not? It depends on the officer, because the regulation itself remains unchanged. I think the guidance they issued was unnecessary.

I'm having trouble believing this. All they had to do was attempt to force a regen. That's standard procedure with emissions related problems. You force a regen and look at the sensor data to see what doesn't look right. If a delete has been done you're going to notice right away.
Again, I don't believe this. I think all they had to do was look at the data for the DOC and DPF pressure and temperature sensors and they would have seen something wrong. An EGR cooler could be replaced because of a coolent leak, but how did they determine the EGR valve was bad without trying a regen or at least examining sensor data? And why did they need to replace the ECM? During a delete you reprogram the ECM. You don't physically modify it. A malfunctioning emissions system wouldn't damage the ECM.
Buy a ScanGuage. Read the instructions on how to add additional guages. Add one for DPF outlet temperature. You should see that temperature rise to over 1000 degrees at least once and sometimes twice during a full driving day. Normally it'll stay that hot for about 30 minutes on average. This tells you a regen is in progress. If your truck never does a regen, never asks you to do a manual regen, and never derates or shuts down, then you don't have a DPF system.IndianaF150, Dave_in_AZ, 06driver and 1 other person Thank this. -
Exactly. It doesn't take calling the plant where Kenworths are built to figure out the system isn't reaching regen temp, or the data is out of range. Telling a dpf filter has been hollowed out is just a matter of taking the hardware off. Either they are ripping someone off for labor, or they just started day 1 as mechanics.
A $10k egr cooler better come with a $8k rebate.sawmill, flood and Dave_in_AZ Thank this.
