We farm and typically haul grain but have started hauling building trusses in the off season. The more we have started to do it, the closer we are to going outside of our 100 mile radius more than 8 times a month. Is there an ELD product that allows us to pay month to month for the months when we need it? I'm finding most are a monthly subscription but you are required to pay for a whole year. Thanks in advance.

You will likely be better off buying a Garmin, or one of the other ones that are an outright buy. No monthly fee.
I believe the Garmin is $350, one time and no more fees.

    Farm?

    No authority?

    Right?

I would think that you can just use paper and when you reach the log retention time, you don't have to prove that you were running before that time.

I was told being a farm, you don't have the same record keeping requirements as an authority, so you don't have to retain the logs for six months.

Oh and it is 150 air mile radius not 100 miles.

He's not running ag, he's running a commercial business. As such the time ard exemption is 100 air miles / 12 hour days.
Well unless he's running non-cdl under 26,001 lbs.

I'm reading like @ZVar is. Looks like you probably run Agriculture rules most of the time but are now starting to run non-Ag as well.

(to recap) If you are running Ag rules, you can run a 150 mile radius without ELD and need ELD only outside of that "bubble area" (for lack of a better term.) There are (of course) expanded definitions of all that Ag stuff and here is a great guide if you want: https://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/sites/fmc...ice/elds/81736/eld-hos-ag-exemptions-v3-1.pdf

If you are hauling trusses, then you probably DO FALL under the "100-mile" rule (depending on weight) as you stated and not the 150 on those runs. If you go more than 8 times in a 30-day block outside of your TWO BUBBLES (one is 100 mile stuff and the other is your 150 miles stuff) then you do need ELD as you correctly surmised.

There are very few ELDs that do not have a monthly fee. It is a risky business model AND at least two of them who tried that model have closed their doors as a result so far (One20 and ZED.) However, if you do want to go that direction then I will give you three of them to check here: Garmin, VDO Roadlog, and Blue Ink (BIT.) Each of those 3 have and upside and a downside, but those 3 still appear to be supporting their "no fee" business model at the time of this writing. Keep Truckin was mentioned earlier: they do have a monthly fee, except they have you pay it yearly.

Hope that helps you and maybe some lurkers too.

(Disclaimer: DieselBoss, Inc has ZERO business relationship with any of the companies mentioned in this post and makes no opinions one over the other.)

Yes, that is correct, thank you very much for the help. When you said 100 mile bubble (depending on weight)... what is it that depends on the weight?
