The problem with 2.64 gears is the pinion is alot larger in circumference due to the amount of teeth. So the ring gear is set farther to the side of the carrier. This creates a hell of a side load condition when trying to get one rolling.
I may be wrong but I believe there is a threshold limit on torque to get them ordered in a new truck.
Even with the correct lower geared transmission they would never stand the pressure in my opinion.
Gear ratio over drive or direct for heavy haul up to 110K?

You need to get fuel economy out of your head. Sure, it's great to save a little fuel where you can, but most of the time in heavy haul and oversize, when you go to applying fuel saving measures like the door slammers do, you compromise on the usability of the truck for what you want to do, and with the nature of your loads, you're likely not to see the savings anyway.
Only reason I even keep up with fuel mileage is because you have to for IFTA reporting. It is what it is, and is one of my least concerns with my operation. Fleet wide, I think we average around 5.5 mpg on our IFTA reports.MagnumaMoose, HighCountry, BigBob410 and 6 others Thank this. -

I do get what you are saying yes the truck needs to be able to do the job but what alot of people dont under stand is when you are in an operation where you are only getting around 5 mpg if you could improve that to 6 mpg that's like 12 000 $ per year in your pocket unlike if you were pulling a van going from 8 mpg to 9 that may only be 3500$ a year in savings so the worse fuel economy you get its even more I important to improve. I'm only over 100 000 pounds once in 3 months most of the time I'm around 90-95 the 264 gears with a direct drive will have almost the exact same pulling power as a 355 with a double ove maybe more because you are not loosing 30-40hp in the transmission overdrives are very inefficient.I found out that a direct drive trans has a 14.98 to 1 first gear so startability should be ok the same trans in a single over has a 11.10 first. I was just trying to get any feedback see if anyone else is running this combo over 80 000 pounds gross. Fuel is our biggest expense yes our loads pay very well and you can make great money even with a 5 mpg truck but I like to boost my bottom line as much as possible. If I could spec this truck to get 6.5 mpg for my opinion I would save almost 20 000 per year on fuel that would cover over half the payment makes good business sense to me

How many miles are you expecting to run, that 5 mpg to 6.5 mpg would save you $20k in fuel?SAR, cke, snowman_w900 and 2 others Thank this. -
