I have been at ABF for over 10 years and I would NEVER tell a friend or relative to come to work at
* * * MY TERMINAL * * *. ABF is a wild card and some things very greatly from terminal manager to terminal manager. The one in North Carolina may be completely different than what I am experiencing. Our board is * * * HOG BOARD * * * which means the most senior man rested with hours is dispatched first on extra board runs.
We had two guys quit back in September. One did not work for 10 days because he was always getting bumped by senior men. At many terminals drivers are allowed to "PASS" when it is slow and have a day off while letting a junior somewhere down the hog board work. My terminal manager will hear none of it for allowing a senior to have a day off when it is slow but one of the terminals that I drive to is famous for letting drivers drop a run.
You would need to talk to someone at the terminal that you are going to work at that has been there three years or less to see how it has been going for them. If that terminal manager allows drivers to pass on runs and there are seniors that like a day off when they can get it, then perhaps it could work out for you.
My terminal manager is scared that he will not be able to hire drivers in our area so he will tell them what they want to hear instead of telling them the truth. When you talk to the drivers at the terminal that you would be driving out of do ask them how they like the terminal manager.
They cannot stop you from smoking in trucks just remember that if you are a road driver you will be driving a different truck every NIGHT. You will not see much daylight until you are ready to go to bed when most people are starting to work.

I’m in Chicago and Fedex Freight is always hiring and they need driver apprentice me too. They can’t keep drivers or is there high demand? Just curious.

They plan on adding another 100 doors, but this building is just old and falling apart. It would be much cheaper to build a new one and tear this one down. This barn used to be owned by Consolidated freightwaysCardfan89 and Alegria123 Thank this. -
