CBers causing problems with home electronics

No, you busted me: I was thinking of a local base station who can put a blanket over half the county when he's ticked; fortunately not too often.
The mobile was 10,000w. Seven 150w alternators can produce 12,600w peak if you rev up that big v-8, so a little headroom they leave gives you about 10k.
Enough to make your hair stand up, my pacemaker to stop, and give you a radioburn.
I bet they could hear him for a few miles...but I doubt that anyone here has a meter that can read it! I guess that they guess by the amps.

one of the bigger guys i rem was the orig caddliac man in tx use to hear him up in org/wa advertisin.
Some call it skip i have no clue i could hear him plain as day i heard they busted um and made him turn it down some I also dont think its the same guy now i heard rumors it is his boy .

 

Hey, I remember Caddyman! We could hear him here in GEORGIA too! But you can shoot skip with 100 watts or less if conditions are right, easier on sideband tho. I hit Kentucky one day on a barefoot mobile from Springfield Mo. for a half hour, antenna stuck on the tailgate of my pickup when I got in off the road and was waiting for night to drive home. Nowadays we have 007 and Black Rhino on channel 20 ticking everyone off in Atlanta. I'm sure they think it's great, but I wish someone would pin their coax's.

I still find that an awful lot of power. What would a driver hear on his CB, if anything, with a signal that strong? I would think the only thing you'd hear is a momentary sizzle, crack, pop of your radio's melt-down and a lot of cussing from some seriously pissed-off truckers.

 

That type of power is only used for the shootouts. There are MANY 1k rigs out here, sweet 16's and the like that have a lot of function if not abused. But to be honest, my little TS 670 only gets turned on once in a VERY rare time, because I talk all I need to and as far as I want on the 28 watts the radio uses. And that at under 100% modge and the mike a few inches away for clarity.
Also, if I'm talking to people next to me (within a mile) I don't even get that close, allowing the power to drop even more. Always get heard. So I agree with the guys who wish amps weren't used; it's just there when I need it on rare occasions.

 

I am currently not driving but will be back out there in the next month or so and have a question for you. I have an RCI 6900/F150. On impulse, Texas 500W amp and ran it with an in-line Astatic 600 so that I could, to the best of my ability use the power available responsibly. Now, my question: When the amp was installed they had to "turn down" my CB. Does that mean that without the amp my radio has less power? Should I just lose the amp and have my CB reset to factory spec? Appreciate any help.

 

"They" should have used one of your unused knobs to wire in a variable deadkey, instead of lowering the deadkey to protect the amp and get the input right. That would allow you to use full power when barefoot, and drop off the deadkey to use the amp. But you don't want to forget it; you can blow an amp, or at the least sound really crappy.

Now, if you're going to be driving a company truck and since these days you a.) spend most of your time listening to FM or XM radio, since your truck can't go fast enough to worry about speed traps, and b.) turn off the cb most of the time because you CAN'T RELY on half of the info you get anyway. c.) you'll have to de-rig it over and over when you switch trucks, which, if you tend to install one properly, is a bit of a bother.

Personally, I'm not planning on taking my amp with me. I almost never need it, as my radio is about a 28 watt swing with 100% modulation, and it punches quite well enough to converse with everyone around me, and when things are quieter, can talk 70 miles if the ground noise is down. Half of your radio is your antenna; no good antenna; no good radio. As for the amp, the only time I'll miss it is when I want to power down for a second with my favorite saying that NO ONE ever comes back to:
"GOD DOESN'T #### ANYBODY: YOU DO THAT TO YOURSELF DRIVER!"
