Added note, I used heavy duty synthetic Super S gear oil, a little thicker along with a gallon of Lucas synthetic ( also thicker weight) Did the same on rears. The Super S is about half the price and a good product. Lucas however is expensive. So far 2.3 mil on rears.700k on oil still looks new. Ready for another change.

The main reason for failure in any trans is letting the gear oil get low.Eaton transmissions have 2 countershafts that support The main shaft. All The shafts are submerged in oil and lubricate each other through splash. If the oil level gets low no lubrication, which causes heat, hence bad oil.The way you tell the level is right is stick your finger in the the filler hole and bend it,you should be able to feel the oil, that's full, anything below that, add until it starts coming out the hole.Like everyone else said, they're bulletproof and don't fail right away, they make noise they don't shift well and they whine. As long as you keep oil in them they'll keep going.Nothing lasts forever, but Eaton Fuller transmissions are very reliable. The only thing better is Mack, IMHO, they have a patented 3 countershaft design.

I’ll tell you what. Mine suddenly started making noise. The bearings were shot on the top right countershaft. Oil always kept up.Maybe just a fluke, but a friend of mine came over and before we even inspected it he said I bet it’s the right countershaft bearing. Sure enough.I notice the right side countershaft is above the oil line.Maybe starved of oil? I wonder.

My repair guy usually suggests swapping it. There’s a shop here that sells you a remanufactured one and you turn in your transmission plus a couple thousand depending on what type of transmission. I did it a few years ago for a 13spd and it was like $3k with labor. Can’t say if that’s good or not but I was happy and it took one day.

That's the bearing that takes the most stress when you let out the clutch, I believe.Like I said earlier nothing lasts forever, but that design has been around longer than I have, and they take the lickin and keep on ticken. My favorite is the 4x4 with airshift, 16 forward gears. I did the clutch on one, in a. Diamond Reo what a monster, shifted like a dream though.
