I'm wondering how many loads/miles he needs per week/month to cover his fixed expenses.

 

I guess you’re going to be booking all your own loads. Otherwise, whether you can be successful would be answered if you knew how much an average Truck makes Leased to said Carrier. 1.70 sounds high to Me. 45 k Truck, I agree with that. Pymt is doable maintenance will probably cost the same if not more over 3-4 yrs. With a little luck, no real major repairs over $4000,Along with $15000 to start, and getting it up to $20000 ASAP wouldn’t hurt. As far as rates go they’re always up or down. That’s not the deal breaker, so much as total revenue, minus fuel. Net income minus fixed overhead. The more you run the higher your maintenance costs, but at a lower overall per mile cost. Good Luck to You. I’d say if you want to do it, go for it . You’ll make it work, otherwise if only looking for the Big money opportunity, wait a few months till rates pick up. Giving you a better chance right off the bat.

 

I used to think everyone was discouraging due to self interests, also thought a lot were keeping things a secret. But in reality most were honestly telling Me it was difficult. As long as your committed you should be successful. And the truth is many don’t really know the answers, or much more than you do. There’s a surefire way to avoid failure. That is to have a ton of cash on hand, and Truck paid for. Impossible for most. It’s always going to be a risk, any bussiness. Main thing I can say is limit your exposure, that is, try not to risk losing what you already have in the process

 

$1.70 a mile operating cost is crazy. You really need to figure out how to lower that. With a trailer payment I’m at $0.85 a mile. You should figure this without your pay included.

It’s always like this every year. It’s always slower in the first of the year. Soon as spring hits it will be back to normal. 2018 was actually above normal. I’ve been doing this for 11 years and it’s always up in the summer and down in the winter. People panic when they have $3,000 a month truck payments and ungodly debt.

My maintenance is high enough for a replacement truck after selling current one when it’s time. My first truck was $16k and I just keep moving up. Current one is about $35-40k. Also I get no fuel discount and no group insurance rates.
